    X Type diesel?

Smart, refined, comfy, cheap tax and we regularly get 50mpg plus out of our 2008 saloon

You need to factor in how much it'll cost to upgrade car (cost of new car - value of old car + insurance difference), but generally yes a diesel would be the best option. Pretty much any modern diesel will match or better 35mpg though.
  • Amazing how we get zero details - we're not mind readers. :)

    - Miles outside of work mileage?
    - Budget (kind of important)?
    - Size?

How do you work that out? At 35mpg you are using about 5 litres of petrol for 40 miles 5 X £1.30 = £6.50
You are not going to save much by changing car after the costs of changing your car are taken into account.

    ..and what about coming back?

    80 miles = 2.3 gallons / 10.5 litres...x 1.3-1.35 = £13.50-£14...

Doesn't quite add up, still, but much closer.

In any case, OP, you really need to tell us more about what size car you want and what you want to spend.

You can get some very economical petrol cars now (DS3, Aygo), but there's no point us recommending anything if they're going to be too small, too expensive etc.

Diesel doesn't work out cheaper when you take into consideration the cost of getting a car with a diesel engine and the (more expensive) price of diesel at the pump.

My view is that you would be better changing to a more modern petrol car which has a much lower mpg rate. As citykid has pointed out VW do a great range although be warned - you pay for it in performance.

i realy think you need to consider many things when changing cars these days.a lot of modern cars are minefields with things like d.p.f filters and duel mass flywheels.
all i know is that i can never see myself changing my current car again. seat arosa 1,4tdi 2001. does a genuine 75mpg on a run (top up to top up) and 57mpg round town.30 per year to tax, £105 to insure.flys through it's mots every year.and as for performance it weighs less then 1000kg and has 75bhp so perfectly adiquate. but then it's horses for courses i suppose.
