Window 9 Metropolis? man that sounds super, I'll check the Daily Planet for a release date.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Windows 8 has been an excellent operating system.

Saying that I've had to make it look and feel like W7 to be useable using the excellent Classic Shell http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/

Happy paying just £15 for it (had been using the beta version for several months).

The biggest benefit (and why I can't go back to W7) is it can copy files to and from other drives without constant faffing about. It just does it. As you'd expect.

They have excised the excellent Microsoft Security Essentials options AFAIK and replaced it with the not much use Windows Defender. A real step back.

AVG does the job though http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/

Classic Shell is free.........Star8 is paid for

    Is Classic Shell Free?
Yes, Classic Shell is free and open-source software.

Seen Windows 8 for the first time today. Took me 10 minutes to figure out how to switch the computer thing off. (Alt-F4). Looks like I'm going to do need a laminated list of keyboard shortcuts to use it.

No doubt the same people who defended Vista will defend this rubbish. And it is just that. Rubbish.

If you're going to defend this, why not join the NRA as well.

Obviously, if you sweep in from the right (on a tablet) or move the mouse to the right edge of the screen (on a computer), a panel shifts in from the right which contains a power button.

Yup - another example of the inconsistencies:
    • Taskbar is semi-transparent, but window borders aren't.

Actually I chose to have a transparent taskbar. There is another version of the theme where it is not transparent.

The default is semi-transparent, whereas you can't have it with window borders.

That is inconsistent - why keep the feature for the taskbar and not for windows?

Windows Defender is NOT a rebirth of Microsoft Security Essentials it's the same crap WD as it was before.

With all due respect, you're incorrect. The old Windows defender only offered spyware protection, however the version which ships with Windows 8 is a full AntiVirus and Anti spyware / malware solution :)

WD is not a patch on MSE and in no way 'full' in my experience of anti-virus products.
  • I would not be surprised if Microsoft planted some Astroturf here to shore up Windows 8 failing reputation in order to boost sales.
There is no justification in forcing a touchscreen os on desktop users.
I intend to downgrade to win7 on laptop I hope that is possible if not it's linux baby all the way with apple getting a look in at last.

  • Why should I mess about with shells etc? that is asking too much for people who would merely like to install software they like of choice rather than be inflicted with microsofts sorry !!!!!! of an app store.
Google and Apple are slaughtering MS and they know it.
Microsoft is committing commercial suicide, they have the money but can't be bothered to use it to provide os that linux kiddies can make up.

For those of you looking for a new machine who are looking for one with Windows 7, it's also worth noting that OEM versions of Windows 8 Pro come with downgrade rights. Providing you have access to a Windows 7 CD and product key you can borrow. It does involve having to call MS and explain why you are using someone else's product key, however.
