Just a reminder: Primary Care Commissioning Groups will replace PCT's on 1 April 2013 and each one may view IVF prescribing differently to the PCT it replaces.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Most the drugs used in IVF are not used exclusively for IVF. The PCT blocks the prescription of the drugs for the purposes of IVF but not necessarily a blanket ban on the drug.

The Doc can either prescribe the drugs and "forget" to tell the PCT beforehand in which case they may be told off afterwards or alternatively some GPs will be evasive or not 100% honest to the PCT (eg saying it is just for fertility rather than explicitly IVF)

An associate's GP prescribed their hCG for IVF under the males name because hCG for male fertility treatment was allowable by the PCT but prescription to the female for IVF wasnt. The fact that she took it (and his sperm counts were allegedly fine anyway - I didnt ask as I didnt need to know) is totally out of the GPs hands

A practice/GP would be very silly to do this as they are becoming more and more under scrutiny from other practices (hence the clinical Commissioning Group as stated above). Why should a surgery take the risk of being looked down at their clinical practice (and illegal practice if prescribing a drug for someone when intended to be used by their partner) just because a patient wants private treatment at a reduce cost?

I haven't personally, although I have had three friends friends who have successfully had IVF babies. One was luck first time, another had lots of unsuccessful goes but eventually had a cycle that worked and another had this beautiful, not so little anymore, bundle :)

  • A friend of mine is celebrating her first Christmas with her IVF twins and my cousins wife is due her IVF twins in May....both were successful on their first go as well!
  • I know it's been a while since I posted but thanks for all your replies. We live in Northern Ireland so we get one IVF treatment free. We have been to the well being clinic in Belfast so after I was last there I think it was Nov 2012 we were told to wait 3 months and they would be in contact..

Although my wife and I have a beautiful 5 year old daughter we have been trying without success for another baby for over 4 years so we have just started the early stages of the IVF process.

It will probably be our only time going through it as the first one is free.

Has anyone had any success with this before??

My six month old is an IVF baby. There's a great thread about fertility treatment here on MSE. You'll find lots of support there.

not sure how they rate now but 12 years ago ivfconnections.com were the original and the best. having lots of people going through the experience at the same time was a great help.
    good luck!
