Do Christmas festivities still exist in the workplace?

Not gonna mention my own job as there is more chance of hell freezing over, but when I started working back in the 90's everyone had a works do at Xmas and have to say I really enjoyed them, a Christmas bonus was also common but I've noticed the past few years these thing gradually disappearing, my parents or friends don't have any, my Mrs never had a works do but always got £100 of vouchers at Xmas, that's gone to. Do these things still exist for the average worker or are the exclusive to the top end of the employment ladder these days?

My Civil Service employer has NEVER paid for a party for me or my colleagues.

In the days before computers we would have it on site, and the staff bought everything.

Very rarely these days. But the really great news is that Brett will be arriving any day now. No doubt it will be an extra days public holiday in NI....

Believe me you really don't want to know.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Seriously? You really don't know? Take elsien's advice then. And don't put anyone you actually like in a care home.

I was pondering earlier - can you think of a worse place for Brett to decide to go than Belfast, given the current sensitivities there? Not sure whether to explain it to him, suggesting that he keeps away from any such discussions ... or start a book on how long it will be until he causes a riot all by himself! ;)
  • I work in the civil service - we don't get a Christmas bonus, or a paid for 'do', but we do get an afternoon off to go to a meal that we pay for ourselves. Then most of the managers went back to work while everyone else went off to the pub :D
  • We got a free meal out with wine and a bonus and my my husbands, free meal and bar

My work gives out hampers (£100ish) in lieu of a company xmas party. We all bring in food on the last day before xmas and have a mini party, so we are effectively paid to eat food and be merry as there is little work that needs to be done before the 27th.

We get four hours additional flexi-time for Christmas. Various departments organise a lunch or dinner out but it's voluntary and a lot of people don't bother. Our management also hand out a mince pie at the staff meeting nearest to Christmas.
