Rooting phone voids warranty

  • Thanks for your comments - I have never rebooted and enabled debugging I would have remembered that. Now I just need to find out what my options are as customer services have been no help at all.

when my phone died i tried rebooting by holding down the on/off button and the volume up to try a hard reset as suggested on google (this obviously didn't fix the problem) but i still didn't get past the Samsung logo

Don't worry. Rebooting and hard reset are different to rooting.

Rooting essentially means installing software that uses security weaknesses in the phone to allow access to the root directory (upper parts) of memory, which unrooted phones can't access. Once your phone is rooted, you can install custom Roms (different versions of the phone operating system) using ClockworkMod Recovery (which is usually installed in the rooting process).

I believe there is an app that can tell you if you phone has been rooted.

You can't root a phone by accident, there is always a set combination of actions to do so. On the S3 it's Turn your phone off and wait for it to completely shut down. Press and hold the volume down key, the home button and the power button all at once and wait for a few seconds.
    .

Holding a few buttons down does not root the S3.

Op have you had the phone unlocked? Some cheaper places just root and use apps to unlock the phone and don't bother to flash back to unrooted stock leaving you in this situation.

Your phone doesn't sound like it requires a £100 bill either, since voda are wiping their hands of it, Get the phone back and learn how to reinstall software. That should fix the problem.

You are right, it was more to show thats what you need to do to enable bootloader mode, there are a lot mroe steps. The point was you can't simply do it by downloading a file off the web and running it on the phon.
  • I have not had the phone unlocked - it was free with the Vodafone contract.
I don't see why I should reinstall the software - I have done nothing wrong and I don't see why my warranty should be voided.

Ask Voda for proofs. They have to provide them under the SOGA.
  • I have spoken to the repair centre again asking for written proof and they have now told me that after contacting Samsung they have discovered I did not root the phone and my warranty is still valid and they will now repair my phone. All well and good but when I spoke to customers services again they couldn't understand why I was angry, apparently being accused of something and having to spend a day making phone calls to disprove their claims is perfectly acceptable

That's probably the reason they gave up because you kept on at them and they never had any proof ...Well done.
