January 2013 Grocery Challenge

  • Hi would like to join your challenge with a budget of £350.00 for January. I have been reducing my grocery spend over the last couple of months and know £350.00 is doable but ultimately would like to get down to £300.00 until my debts are cleared.

Not sure if that is doable - this is for 2 adults and 2 children. I was mostly doing various internet shops for all the offers but found I was actually spending more. I am also trying to follow a healthy diet especially for me as I have a couple of stone to lose.

2 adults, 3 kids and 2 cats here, a £300 budget is very doable :) it's our max (we have a separate grocery account) trying £200 this month but seeing as DH and I appear to be shopping separately (he's doing my head in  ) it's not going so well...

Hope it all sorts itself out. It must be very frustrating!

Little spend of £3 odd today for me so quite pleased with that.

Pasta, sauce and veggie meatballs for tea this evening. Made some fruit bread in the panasonic...so really i suppose i hardly 'made it' lol!

Froze some lentil soup and made up a large tub of salad for the fridge...mixed salad leaves, a third of a red cabbage sliced, vine tomatoes sliced, pickled beetroots slices, carrots grated, peppers sliced...then made a sauce for the salad...tomato paste, lemon juice , balsamic vinegar, dried herbs, salt.

  • Two weeks in to my budget and it's looking good so far. Total spend £120.91 (out of £300 budgeted).

That breaks down to £71.32 on food and drink, £29.19 on dog/chicken food etc, and £20.40 on household/car stuff.

The pet food will take us well into next month, and the car bits were deicer and scraper in anticipation of cold weather (which may never come now, but at least I'm prepared!). I've been buying basics items where possible (I shop mostly at Mr S) as well as using up meat from the freezer, and it's made a big difference - this time last month I'd have reached at least £150 on groceries alone.

(This is sad, I know, but what's helped me keep track is making a spreadsheet to analyse my shopping receipts, showing not only what I'm spending weekly, but also split into different categories. Eventually there will be pivot tables and graphs, when I have more data to play with.)

  • I popped into Mr T to buy a birthday card and ended up spending £11.02, so not happy, but I did get milk, potatoes, oil, spaghetti, cheese, quorn, bread, eggs, bananas and chocolate, but have been trying so hard just doing online, just waiting for my online order this morning and tbh I didn't make a list nor buy any fruit and veg so I am going to A later to get that, ......and I caved in and bought the kids a maccie ds last night which I will add onto my spends for the month. Planning and sticking to it really works will get back on track next month, only saving grace is that I had £16 evoucher from mr T. X

6 no spend days so far, woohoo!!!

    Hope you are all ok?

Going to go and walk mums dog today with the sprogs so a nice cheap Saturday.
(I have to tire the little old ankle biter out before he will let me clip his nails!! I get 'bitten' to death his toothless mouth otherwise:D )

I will drop off a load of baby clothes that I got from freecycle last night to my pregnant sis on the way back along with belly bands and other useful stuff that will save her some pennies.

I'm going to carry on making blankets this evening too with my free wool (freecycle again!) for my sister's baby so that's my frugal evening planned too.

I have leftover curry to pull out for tea so no real cooking today either.

All in all, a frugaltastic day. :j

Wishing you guys have the same.

    Catch you later peeps :)
