The fact is he does resent his brother for having children - I can't do anything about that.

    Maybe it's common I don't know.

Well you could start by showing some more compassion and understanding instead of trying to punish him further!
  • I'm not really bothered how controversial it gets - its interesting to know what others think.

I've spent far too much time on this now, it's keeping me away from my chores!!

Just think, I could be earning money for my children's house fund instead of sat here on an MSE forum.

This is my final post on the matter - no doubt there will be pages and pages more from you lot who live here. Or maybe they will close it down as you some of you are a bit rotweillerish.

    Bye bye.

I've had a go at the OP, but these are very difficult questions occurring due to ridiculous house prices, housing shortage & Inheritance Tax starting to crucify normal people.

Most normal people have not had to plan in advance for Inheritance Tax, with its complexity & so many loopholes.

It can be a big shock to realise how much tax will be paid & the things that could have been done years earlier to avoid Inheritance Tax.

The only person that gains from public's lack of knowledge is the Tax Man.
It's a pity because I'm sure most parents don't want to give a penny to the Tax Man.

It's very difficult for parents to plan their Wills, plan for Inheritance Tax in advance & involve the family/beneficiaries without things going funny.

If parents/parents in law want to plan Wills & plan for Inheritance Tax, that's fantastic, but it's very difficult for the children/relations to raise this issue first, without something being taken the wrong way.

I can just see the Bargainmad clan huddled in the solictors office, have already spent in their minds "their" inheritance.

and the solicitor suddenly announces "grandparent Bargainmad, have left all their worldly goods to Oxfam or NSPCC"

the shock, horror on their faces as they scream at the solicitor but we NEED it more than the starving......we want to get that holiday home in France etc etc
Have any of you ever seen the opera, Gianni Schicchi, about exactly this situation? :D

It's based on a scene from Dante's Inferno. A man dies with his extended family gathered around his deathbed and his extended family feign inconsolability - until they discover that their late relative has left all his worldly goods to the local monastery, at which point their tears become real! They then hatch a plan to get around it and get the estate for themselves, but in the process the cheats are themselves cheated out of most of it... (edited to say: ...by somebody who's only doing it in order to set his daughter up for life :rotfl: )

Sorry off topic :D (and not meaning to be insulting towards you personally, OP!)

I havnt read every post on this thread so apologies if i repeat anything!
I havnt even thought about how my 3 children will afford houses - i cant myself yet!!! We rent in the area i grew up in and me and my husband want to stay in this area. And we have come to the conclusion we wont be able to afford a deposit towards the morgage until hubbys parents die. It is an awful thing to say - but they say it themselves. Mother in law has said numerous times 'why go and get a supidly priced morgage now when all of this (house in france and 2 chalets locally) will be yours when we peg it, do it then' . I find this so frustrating - we need a house now while our children are young. But hey ho!
In this area particularly you can not buy anything under £140k. Without a hefty deposit or help from parents - its very hard.
I think you are very generous parents wanting to help your children on the ladder when the time comes. I hope i will be able to do the same for my children one day.

Well that was a waste of time huh guys?

Why do people post who have no actual interest in considering alternative points of view?

Still, locked in one room at home today while my windows are being replaced and it's kept me entertained.

And if they can sort themselves out in life then brilliant. We can then go to town on all year round luxury holidays, cruises etc, etc.

If you don't go on holiday because you are saving to help the children get a house in the distant future I think it's very sad, memories are just as valuable an inheritance as a stack of cash.

As I said in my earlier post I have given my two all the support they needed in education and the rest is up to them.

I plan to retire early and swan off around as much of the world as possible with my hard earned money and if there is any left it will be split equally between them when I am gone.

Because I think Sarah, that she posted thinking that she was absolutely right and that everybody would agree with her. Must have been quite a shock! :D

EDITED TO ADD: The OP's closing post, did sound a touch defensive and I truly hope that the posts on here have given her food for thought.

I don't think anyone was arguing with that point.
