Just a not about quorn, it is a mushroom derivative so I'd be careful how often I'd serve it up, especially with those who don't get along with yeasty foods.
If trying tofu it's better frozen, then defrosted and the juice squeezed out between a couple of sheets of kitchen roll to make it more chewy and less jelly. It's lovely fried up in some olive oil & garlic before being added to stir frys etc.
yeasty....squeezing to make less jelly like and more chewy.....
see, call me a meat eating cave woman all you like, but nothing you just said sounded at all appetising! lol0 -

Yes I see that, I was referring to suggestions by other posters.
Tbh sausages and burgers are the last thing anyone should be eating...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/background_briefings/food_safety/264136.stmAt present meat includes fat (up to half of the meat can be fat), connective tissue (skin rind and gristle) and mechanically recovered meat, known as MRM.
MRM is a pulp which is produced in abattoirs when high-powered jets of water are sprayed on animal carcasses after all the decent cuts of meat have been rendered. The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0 -

I hear chewy and I think of beef. I hear jelly like and I think of the fat round pork chops. Not appetising to me. LOL We're all different. Personally I love tofu but it's not to everyone's taste. And neither is meat.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
Gingham_Ribbon wrote: »Most take-aways do veggie dishes. (Actually, I can't think of one that doesn't.) Are you writing off veggie food as bland because you've not tried to make any? I don't think my cooking is bland - far from it!
sorry, what i meant was.... say if we went to macdonalds, she would want chicken nuggets, not a salad bowl
if i told her she couldnt have them because she is a vegetarian she would be pulling *that* face and be in tears within seconds
(shes far from a brat by the way, she is a very well behaved girl, but as we all do... she HATES being caught out like that!)
I dont think all veggie food is bland and im sure your cooking is delicious, but some of the meat substitutes ive seen just look disgusting, if you have to substitute it and have things that have a "real meat taste" why not do yourself a favour and eat the real thing??!!
seriously... how can you not want a bacon sandwich when you smell one cooking??0 -

Do you really want an answer to that? The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0 -
Do you really want an answer to that?
hmmn... after your post about sausages and burgers... probably not! lol
im really not trying to be contraversial or anything, I just havent ever really wanted to miss out on things like roast lamb with mint sauce, i cant imagine there is a veggie alternative that tastes half as good as that (and i would be happy to eat a quorn stuffed hat if im completely wrong!)
you know....I think the baby im carrying must be craving meat!!0 -
What a clever & thoughtfull li'l girl you have!!
My veggi phase started when I was about 12, my mum gave me Sainsburys steak & kidney pie for Sunday dinner, so I could remove the bits that looked like dead animal!!
& I've managed to survive pretty well since 18ish & strict veggi. I also recocgnise & avoid animal products which are in sooooooo many other foods & houshold products.
I'm NOT a green wellie activist or anything sinister, but can more than see the sense & benefits in doing this.
& as mentioned earlier, simply go along with her & she'll either forget about it & eat what you give her, or become even MORE aware of some of the rubbish the supermarkets create for us & pretend it to be 'good' food!!
Oh yes - I'm 50 now!!

I thought not
You're giving your opinion at the end of the day, that's fair enough. But it's nicer when people take the trouble to learn a bit about these issues before discussing them. To many people make the mistake of putting something down while not having the first idea about the reality, in all areas of life. The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0 -
The trick is not to eat meat substitutes. It's to eat vegetarian food that's not trying to be like meat. Every few weeks we have tofu sausages. Other than that I can't think of any meat type product we have. Macdonalds do a veggie burger I understand. If she's serious she might want to try one. If she's not then she'll want the meat one and she'll have lost her argument.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0
