I think that payback will be cut sooner or later so am enjoying it while it lasts(getting £1000 next week).

Well I once spent around 20 hours in total giving informative and thoughtful answers in the Giffgaff forums and received about £12.

After that I decided the hourly remuneration was far too low to be worth bothering with.:(

There probably is an optimal strategy, but it doesn't seem to involve giving helpful answers. Perverse incentives is probably why the GG forums contain so much junk........

I got 46p payback for some reason, I have not used the forum or helped anyone. Do you get paid for NOT being an annoying so and so too? in that case a lot of the people on the forums must owe GiffGaff £1000!

I only got £87 or so Payback this time around (usually I'm lucky to get a tenner) because I'd been complaining! And I got an extra fiver for bringing my mum to GiffGaff.

If you've spent 20 hours actually paying attention and being helpful (a rarity on the GiffGaff Community) then it beggars belief that you only got £12, Herongull.

Of the 'networks' you mention, they are all MVNO's (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) so need the technology of another (senior) partner in order to provide the advertised service - a 'front' if you like.

Any innovation they can offer can only be on price, as they have no ability to do anything else, bearing in mind they have to work within the constraints of the physical network they signed up to.

The outages multiply too - assuming the actual network being used is up and working (not their responsibility) there can be issues with their links to this network, authentication, billing and a myriad of issues that can knock their customers off, whilst those on the core network are unaffected.

Let's assume O2 has (another) major technical issue that affects connectivity. It is a given than GiffGaff will be off too, but you are fooling yourself if you believe any MVNO will be reconnected ahead of that network's own customers.

So it makes sense to realise that MVNO's are a useful revenue stream to a network but nothing more than this, and for those that prize reliability over cost the answer is clear.

I always believe dealing with the organ grinder is preferable than doing the same with a monkey.......

When Network providers have problems they are not normally in a position to prioritise one batch of customers over another batch ( Giffgaff, Tesco etc ). Mobile networks just don't work like that and by paying more into O2's coffers just means you can waste time having a winge on the phone.

Using Giffgaff has been the same for me as using O2 only difference has been gg is half the price before payback comes into the equation.
We are not locked in by gg so I for one will keep pocketing the savings for as long as it lasts
  • I pay £10 a mth and get more mins, texts and data than I can use.

My wife and daughter top up every 3mths and we are able to make calls to each other foc within that time period. No other network compares with that.

Based on this information, Giffgaff is poor value for you and your family

Unlimited Free calls and texts within network is commonplace these days among other virtual operators eg Ovivo, White Mobile, Icard Mobile and Talk Home Mobile. All of these are cheaper than Giffgaff and/or give you more for the same money.

I suspect Ovivo would probably meet all your family's needs as long as you get good reception on vodafone (which Ovivo uses).

Cost per month (assuming the free monthly bundle of 100 minutes, 100 texts, and 300mb is sufficient) £0 per month instead of £10 per month with Giffgaff.

I believe the maximum payback anyone can get in one month for helping others on the community is something like £30. To get that, you probably need to focus on quantity not quality of replies.

You can get additional payback by getting friends and family to join GG, but other virtual networks also have this feature eg Talk Home gives you £5 for each recommended joiner, Ovivo gives you £2

Do you seriously mean £1000? What did you have to do to get that much???

Hypothetically - don't you get more payback if your answer to a query is accepted as the best by the query poster?

So what is to stop a group of friends deliberately posting loads of 'questions' and nominating only each others answers to maximise the groups earnings.. meanwhile all the other unsuspecting punters trying to help never stand a chance.
