Well I'd love to know how you flew?
Economy flights were £600+ each return. I upgraded to premium economy for extra leg room and to keep me from committing murder on the way there!

Economy. Its not that bad when you get used to it. Just put some films on/sleep/eat :)

Plus we always fly with American and they dont have premium economy so its that or pay around £3k for business class and Im not a millionaire :rotfl:

    Really ?

It does depend on the time of the year of course , but last year we did San Francisco then a 5 day trip to Maui , the flights to Maui cost us £2500 alone , let alone the hotel !

Ive never paid anymore more than £780 for a flight to Maui. Ive been in April, June, October. Ive seen flights for £600ish for this winter on sale this year. Did you really pay £1250 each?? Thats insane! What airline was that? Were you in premium economy or business one way or something?

Then the condos we rent are about £60 a night.

So if flights are say £700 each, thats £1400.

    Add on 14 nights at £60 = £840.

    Total holiday £2240

That does seem very expensive for 5 nights in San Francisco, even with Premium Economy flights. We spent less than that on a 17 night flydrive that included 4 nights in San Francisco. Granted, we flew economy with US Airways but we got there fine and had plenty of legroom (I'm 5'8" so not short). The food was a bit rubbish but our flights only cost £517 each. I know which holiday I'd prefer but if you're happy with your choice then that's all that counts really. San Francisco is an amazing place, I'd go back now if I could.
  • Flights to San Fran are expensive and so are most of the hotels....when I was there a few years back, though, I stayed at a place called the Taylor Hotel - very old hotel, but clean, comfortable and exceedingly cheap - probably around $50 per night, if not less. It was also only a block away from the more expensive hotels in the centre of town.

I gave up booking hotels in SFO years ago. Much better value to book an apartment on vrbo.com

    What's wrong with that?

Yeah I stayed in a motel in San Fran for around £50 a night, was fine, just had a slightly longer walk to buses etc than if wed stayed somewhere more central.

Andy - I think the thing is you could go to San Fran for 5 nights for so much cheaper that the OP would not have needed to have saved for 2 years!
  • Have you ever flown in Premium Economy, or whatever Virgin call it? We got upgraded to it on British Airways last year on the way back from China.

Absolutely not worth the money in my opinion, a very little extra legroom and you get to be addressed by your name, that's about it. We would never pay for it having experienced it.

Ahh, BA World traveler plus is not in the same league as Virgin PE even though they are the same class.... If you see what I mean
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Totally agree. VS PE superior to WTP no doubt about it.
