Hi Jethro, done that ok.
When uploading a folder for backup, does it remove folder from pc,
or just replicate it in drive, leaving the original on pc , to be added to or amended ?
Also, does it auto amend drive as I save or delete docs/pics etc on pc ?.
actually;;
Don,t know if 5gb is enough? Ordered new 8gb stick, probably needed 16gb.just put docs and pics on it.
I back C>D weekly scheduled, and just looked and D is showing 93.5 of 107 unused, so used 13.5gb.
Presume that includes all progams etc on C everthing ?
I've been playing around with Google drive all weekend
Its great tool with some strange quirks
Starting with the app insists on creating a folder on your PC called Google Drive which must be empty
Once done it will start by downloading any files you already have uploaded on the cloud
It is very fast at this so if like me you need to do it on more than one PC (I have 3) don't worry about set up time
Once set up it works great
You can add files/folders via any PC
You can edit any files, rename of even delete and it will sync this activity on-the-fly with the cloud drive And with your other PCs just like email
Brilliant
I also read it still has bugs so I am going to backup to DVD once week
5 GB is enough for meWhen will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?0 -

Backup is at least 3 copies of your data (to be useful) ie Grandfather/Father/Son. If you delete/amend something on your PC and it gets reflected on your online/other backup how can you recover the stuff you delete/amend by mistake.
So, really need a seperate , stand alone, snapshot, periodically, daily, weekly,? that just adds and doesn,t remove from backup, of all data for backup??:beer:0 -

When I did a trial I,ve got the GD file, empty, just drag /dropped 1 file to it, it uploaded to GD, but disappeared from pc, so to view it, I had to go into GD file,so restored it, went to trash on GD, occupying space on GD, deleted it, it,s back on pc, but not in GD file.
What am I doing wrong.?OR, does GD folder, contain, replace all other folders, conaining sub folders, with same in cloud???
The bugs are a concern to me, but get them everywhere.
Son, just paid PCWorld £90 rid him of babylon,??? that,s the mistake about hardrive closed, he was conned,I told him to post it on here, but too idle;; they sold him another a/v suite, £28, ???? and they just told him babylon as soon as he walked in the shop, his wife was concerned about photos. More money than sense;;;;unlike his dad.
Takes me a while to get the hang of something ;;;;:rotfl:0 -
Hi, me too, been naffling with it all day yesterday, but I may be doing it wrong. I have just 1 pc, don,t do much work on it now, so really just need a straight forward backup of docs/pics/new files, similar to windows backup from C>D auto every day but seperate from pc obviously.

Not quite sure how you're using Google Drive - but the idea of synced copy of all my work documents on the cloud and available wherever i go is too good to ignore
The quirk with Google Drive is just during initial set up - e.g. you can't direct the Google drive to an existing folder and file structure already on your PC - strange but true
When you first run GDrive app it will ask you to sign in, and ask you whereabouts on your PC you want the sync folder
It creates an empty folder called "Google Drive" on your PC - no choice of name
From there is easy
Just drag/move any files you want to sync into it (I have my whooooole My Docs in it)
It will sync those into your cloud drive
From there you can add/edit/delete files on your PC and it will sync any of that activity with your cloud drive
The 'backup' function (there are a million interpretations of that word) is if your computer/laptop/tablet/mobile get stolen, broken or simply die - just hook up to your gmail account with any PC in the world and it will replace all your files - perfect
The other key benefit to me is the ability to add/edit/delete/use the same document on any of the 3 PCs I use
Since Gdrive is bugged, and as method of archiving (another type of backup) - I am going to burn my doc to DVD once a week
So far I've been really impressed with GDrive and it will certainly make my flash drive virtually redundantWhen will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?0 -

quirky it is, just a bit of getting used to not having pics, etc inside thier own folders on pc, as vista works, having to click on GD folder, to access everthing backed..plus deleting a doc goes to trash which occupies free space.
EDIT::Been fiddling with it a bit;Synced photo,s 329 in just over an hour ?
Easy to get at.All folders green ticked ok. Had to open zip, s to sync, blue arrow circling it;stayed in own vista pics, ticked green, and in gd folder;
Done docs too, easy. They moved from vista docs to gd folder,
QUOTA USED ???
Photo,s only show, as docs, each item amount, not total of space.
,, without adding every KB, MB , of every 320 photos, don,t know how much of my 5 Gb i,ve used. probably maxed out.0 -
Hi, Jethro, using it same as you, drag/drop, the confusing bit, is/was that all folders pics/docs/etc become a sub folder of GD Folder, so to add/delete,doc/pic, one has to locate that sub folder within GD , then do it , ? virtually, extract it to work on ???....
I dont have that problem?
I have a gazzillion folders in my docs and it replicates my folder structure 'as is'
In fact inside one of my folders is a 'video' folder containing a webpage which I've made public where 'the public' can access it (from the cloud copy) as a webpage and run the videos - so quite a complicated folder structure - no problem
I'm not sure how you're doing it but i suspect its not quite right
In fact if you logoff gdrive app, delete gdrive folder on your PC and restart the app - the very first thing it does is create the folder structure (in fraction of a second) then spends the rest of the time replicating all the files into them
I have this on 3 PCS, which i've done several times each (because i changed my mind where i want them and you cant move the main gdrive folder once created) and it works first time everytime
By design the main folder has to be called "Google Drive" and its always nested inside some other folder which is a pain i know, but I have read somewhere that there is a workaround for changing it
1/ Quit GDrive app (but dont log out)
2/ Move (or copy) the contents of GDrive folder to wherever you want them - then delete the Gdrive folder
3/ Restart GDrive app - It will complain that the Gdrive folder no longer exists - but will prompt you to say where it is - just point to the new location
Not tried this myself yet - but when i next make a backup to DVD i am going to try and make it default to "My documents" folder on all three machines..QUOTA USED ???

If you right-click the gdrive icon in your systray (bottom right) it should say how much (and what %) of your gdrive space is being used - im using 1.11 GB (22%)When will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?0 -

You also need Syncback Freeware version
I've been using it daily at work for over 5 years
I backup "My Documents" (on my work laptop) to 8gb memory stick several times per day
You can set it up to sync folders or to sync a working folder to a backup folder (thats what i do)
If you just 'sync' folders it means that you can edit files or add new folders/files to either folder and it will just make sure each folder contains latest edits/folders/files - but if you delete a file/folder it will put them back again (sync from other folder), which is no good for me
If you Backup a working folder - you can only edit/add to the working folder, and all changes incl new folders/new files/file edits & deletes will be replicated in the backup folder (memory stick in your case) - benefits being that if you delete files from working folders, it deletes them from the back up (memory stick) too
It is Uber fast!!! - faster than Windows - You wont believe how quick it is - and it only syncs file changes & not the whoooooole folder each time - After I copied My Docs folder over to memory stick once for the very time, it now backs up My Docs to My memory stick in few seconds
It,s only allowing me to choose destination, from same as source;?
Obviously , I,m at fault, doing something daft, NTL and windows backup, say , cannot backup to flash stick, so trying this sync program, without success, Help would be appreciated.
Just str:beer:aightforward backup of c disc to f drive, usb stick?0 -
I just recently bought 2 of these as Secret Santa gifts - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AIGITAO
Not the cheapest USB, but they're metal and excellent quality and useful as a bottle opener too.0 -
getting over complicated, suggest you buy a portable usb hard disk, and either copy your data to it, or do a disk image, a £40-50 500GB-1TB hard disk would probably be big enough to backup all the machines in the house with disk imaging which would enable you to recover a working machine with all data in minutes. flash drives are slow, and smaller capacity, handy for moving data about, but not really a serious backup solution
syncing can be dangerous.!!
