Hi all!
Can I ask a silly question . .
What do you actually do with the cash? I have a mini milk churn full of 20p coins from last year. I bank with a Building Society which doesn't have the facilities to take a lot of coinage and weigh it etc.0 -

Hi, the best thing to do is get loads of money bags, fill them up and take them in any bank and change them for notes. You do not have to have an account to do this.
Other people on here have paid for their shopping at self service tills.
Whatever you do, DO NOT put them in a C0instar machine or you will lose 10% of your savings. HTH.S.P.C. 9 2016 No. 062 Banked £337.50

Hi to all the new folks, come in and make yourself a cuppa, no standing on ceremony here.
On top of the lovely advice from others can I add that subscribing to the thread is BRILLIANT!! The email updates mean you don't forget as you get that gentle reminder, plus it makes it so much easier to find the thread again!!
About pots - my pots are my old ones from last year (99p each from the 99p store). I had to use a can opener to get the money out last year but I pushed the lid back down again (didn't cut all the way round), sealed it back up with a load of tape (so no sharp edges) and covered the top with paper, making a slit over the old hole for the cash lol.Spam Reporter Extraordinaire

I used mine last year for presents and to treat myself to a whole day out without worrying about what things cost.
Although you don't need an account most banks only let you take in 5 bags at a time if you're exchanging for cash. If they're not busy they may let you take more
You could always go in with a friend, get them to put it in their bank in one chunk then take it out the hole-in-the-wall and put it into your bank. In my bank the money goes straight in, before you even leave the bank
Last year, i banked mine into a savings account every few months or so. Over the year i got £1.45 in interest. This isn't much but its more than i would have got letting it sit at home. I guess it depends on how likely you are to spend it doing it that way.
I don't really know how building society's work so this is just my experience from B@rclaysSealed Pot Challenge member #071 VSP #4

Please add me too! I'm saving for a house deposit, but that doesn't stop Christmas happening, so if I aim to save £200 in change and bits that should cover my festive expenses and I can save the big dolla in my bank accountsIf you worry, you die..and if you don't worry, you die... so why worry?!0

Gold stars go to Wyre :staradmin (a superb post quoted below!) also to Modesty :staradmin, little_sweetie :staradmin and to Ruth :staradmin. Lovely work, girls.DreamerHelen, imo the point of this thread is to get us into the habit of saving so that when something comes along we can say 'hey that's not so bad, I can handle this' which is exactly what you did *cheers*. I was watching the tv programme called 'The Middle' the other day and the parents were in a tizzy about accidentally spending too much money on something, until they realised that years before they were thrown in a tizzy by spending far less. So they were getting better with money it just didn't seem like it right at that moment. That's all of us here, trying to get better and be prepared. If that makes any sense whatsoever....lol.
A superb and very friendly post, Wyre, your gold star heads the list above.I have one tip - subscribe to the thread as the email updates really encourage and remind you. You can subscribe at the top of the thread - in the green bar under thread tools.
Thanks a lot, Wyre, you saved me writing all that, brilliant!!! :T You've definitely earned that gold star! See above if you haven't already.I just wanted to say this is a brilliant idea and I will sort of join in as in I'll put any spare cash into my big bottle but I'm not keeping track of it- as I'm too lazy (and it's a nice surprise!)
You'll sort of join, Mr~Mrs???? The way you're saving is exactly as the rest of us do...and apart from that, I've already added you to the list!!! :rotfl:
