Honestly, if he has given you a firm figure and it is a "quote" then what is the breakdown of the quote?

Is the chimney pot and fitting the major change in cost? Does it include a cowl?
Is there something odd about the opening / hearth / chimney that he's had to take into account?

It might be that he is only charging you £100 for the pot and fitting but something else on the job is a bit of a pig and it'll take a bit longer than anticipated.

It doesn't seem extortionate but I'd expect to be told, in a "quote", exactly how the costs are broken down.
  • He's not given me a break down, he just gave me the final price over the phone.

Sussexbaker, can you tell me what that price includes exactly and I'll let you know my thoughts....

    Burley Debdale stove
    Burley extended base for stove
    Register plate
    Flue
    Flue thermometer
    Carbon Monoxide detector
    Chimney pot
and installation of all of those.

    Your thoughts are welcome

At first sight it's a very good price. As long as he doesn't come up with a pile of 'hidden extras' I'd take it.

Excellent excellet price all in. If that's what it is all in, I'd go for it quick sharp. Brief comparison for you which was me sourcing the liner, pot, stove etc:

    Charnwood C-four - £600
    New pot - £40
    316 liner and sundries - £260
Fitting and sign off to include custom register - £390
    CO alarm - £15
    Stove pipe - £20
    Flue thermometer - £12

    Total: £1337.

Fitting and sign off to include custom register - £390
    CO alarm - £15
    Stove pipe - £20
    Flue thermometer - £12

    Total: £1337.
    ...........
  • I'm going to call him back and find out how much adding a liner will add to the price as he's not included that, and I figure if the fitting is higher because of the pot I might as well get the liner done at the same time.

    Thanks for the feedback though.

I paid a similar figure. I think it was £1700, similar to you but a C4 with multi-fuel kit (£700), and a granite outer and inner hearth, the inner one being made to measure, plus making good the plaster round the builder's opening. (No sniggering please.)

As with GreatGimpo, if you're planning to be in the house for decades, yes, go for 914 by all means, but we are here for approx another 5-7 years, and the 10 year guarantee will help. Also, the fact I only burn well seasoned wood will also help with regular personal sweeping.

Leif, I was tempted to go with the multi-fuel kit however held back in the end.... is this for a c-four or the country 4? Both lovely stoves IMO!

FWIW, I had some york stone available FOC so laid that myself and paid a plasterer £200 to fully plaster and render the fireplace breast/back, so probably very similar prices all in.
