Usually do shopping at Tesco. The last week or so, been going to Morrisons and M&S instead. I did a shop in both yesterday and spent a total of £22.37. I went onto Tesco this morning and put in the comparable items into the shopping list and it came out about £4 more. I bought a double pack of premium sausages with nearly 100% pork in M&S for £3.50, in Tesco they were £5! I found the fresh fruit and veg dearer in Tesco than in Morrisons. I got four Braeburn apples for 30p, last week I got a bag of 8 for 80p. They are really big, juicy crunchy ones too, not fun size. Also, they had 1kg bag of carrots for 30p, whilst Tesco was 75p. Fish fingers in Morrisons were 99p per pack of ten, in Tescos they were £1.99.

Anyone see Dispatches the other night about the breakfast cereals etc. They found that most of the taste testers preferred the own brand cereals over the Kellogs, Nestle ones. The kids, without tasting went for the cute characters on the boxes. So buy the own brand equivalent, it would probably work out cheaper for your pocket and healthier in the long run.

I was amazed at how well M&S compared to the other supermarkets and the quality of food is fantastic! I tend to split my shopping betweenb M&S, Waitrose, Morrisons and Netto to get the best mix!!

When the chap that deals in the mis shapen M&S fish fingers has some in they are gone within days! By far the best fish fingers around

Is there a thread on the site where members can state which own brand products, value products taste as good as or better than branded? I usually buy HP sauce and Heinz ketchup, but recently tried the Tesco ketchup and it's not too bad, the kids liked it. Just the glass bottle means a bit harder to limit what comes out, unlike the squeezy plastic bottles. When they are finished and just the dregs left I rinse them out with a bit of water and when making stews, chilli, soups etc I put it in the pan along with the stock.

Also watch out if you internet shop - my friends and I have noticed the supermarkets seem to be using it as an opportunity to off-load food that will very shortly be past its use by date.

For instance, Asda delivered 10 turkey slices to me this week as part of my internet shop, that had a use by date of the very next day. This practice by supermarkets has put me off internet shopping now. You can hardly keep the delivery driver waiting while you check the dates on every item of shopping.

If I'm shopping in person, I always grab the food at the back of the shelf as this usually has a longer shelf-life.

On another note, why do they always have to use so many carrier bags when they're delivering an internet shop? It's almost down to one item per bag!

We had a delivery Thursday 17 December.
The driver arrived before just after 4.00 pm and and there was nobody in. He said it was booked for 4 - 6pm - on my delivery sheet it actually said 5 - 7 pm. Ordered a 1kg piece of pork. The one that arrived was 5.555 kg with a use by date of 17 December - the same day as delivery. I ordered 1 kg piece of beef and a piece 2.50 kg was delivered. There’s only 2 of us in the house but even so surely the packers can see the difference in weight and also the use by date. Plus our freezer was almost full as we’d ordered the Christmas shop. Customer Services tried to get the local store to collect it but they wouldn’t. Instead a refund was offered but this would now take up to 10 days to be credited to our account. When my husband phoned the store to speak to the manager of the customer deliveries he didn't seem in the least interested. This is the 3rd time we have had problems recently - the last delivery had vegetables well past 'fresh' and we had to cut parts off that were bruised and soggy. On a previous delivery we were sent 1 kg of carved ham instead of 0.2kg of ham. I don't know what is going wrong with the Asda deliveries but up to recently we praised them to everybody and couldn't fault the produce. But they have now lost a customer. I'm sure they think that we are just small fish out of a large supply of customers, but if this is happening with other home deliveries then I'm afraid rival stores will be receiving the extra custom
  • :mad:ASDA SHOPPING.- I compare prices on moneysupermarket.co.uk before going shopping, 2 weeks in a row Asda have been advertising items on their own website and moneysupermarket eg: Nestle Cheerios 600g - 2 for £2.00, ASDA own brand ice cream 2 for £2.00, on going for these items shelf price of cheerios was £2.77 per packet, ice cream was 2 for £3.00. Bought both today - was charged £2.50 per packet for cheerios and £1.90 per tub of ice cream but on actual tubs it said 2 for £3.00, took all to customer services was told prices in store differ from online but under terms & conditions 3.1 clause says price advertised on line on that day is the price in store but store would not comply with this at all. I am now contacting Trading Standards on this matter.
  • Ive been replacing weetabix biscuits with shop's own brand for years. Every 6 months or so I replace one packet of weetabix to keep the box/packaging fresh but replenish with shop's own brand. My daughter sees it come out of the weetabix box and thinks no different! Do the same with rice krispies.

Ive tried it with other stuff over the years but the cereal one is the easiest to get away with.

For some reason if I buy a reduced item, for example a pie or quiche my husband thinks its the best he's ever had. If I had paid full price for it, he would say it was rubbish! I do preserve a few reduced stickers which I slap on a box at home if I've bought similar in a hurry and its not reduced and husband doesn't know any different.

I worked for Asda in Hampshire , A customer told me because the store offered cheaper goods then they were not good quality , As the store had only opened during 2003 , I explained that Asda was a Yorkshire based firm, They had to offer the customer prices to match their pocket (Long pockets, Short arms in Yorkshire ) as wages are lower, Plus they are part of Wal- mart the U.S.A. store giant . The prices were 25% less than the other supermarkets in our district . Even after leaving the firm on retirement - Giving up a discount count of 10%- I find that by shopping on-line once a month , I am in pocket due making use of offers - They give the finish dates on-line for the offers . Part of the discount pays for the delivery as well !
