I'm so upset I just want to cry!
Ebay just want the big power sellers!
    I'm gutted!

No they don't - but they want people who can keep up.

Remember, the money people sent you was for an item - and one way or another, if you were banned, you couldn't keep up with what they wanted from you.

Anywhere you can sell will also be full of people who will give you money on condition you do what they want you to do - there's no free lunch; there's no place where the general public will put up with crud just because it puts petrol in your car or gives your little boy trips out. eBay/Amazon will pay for a new computer for me, but it does so because I get the items out the door first thing and know what people are prepared to pay for - and most importantly I listen to people when they complain and for the most part have been able to avoid or resolve problems when they arose. You do make a commitment when you sell - that won't change much from venue to venue, to be quite frank.

Sorry to be harsh but just saying 'there, there, eBay are nasty and so are the buyers' isn't going to work because at some point, people have to wake up and smell the coffee. Would you put up with poor service when you pay for something? If you worked for a company and people complained to you about the company's products, would you just say they were being malicious? You need to be, if not professional, then focused on the people who pay for stuff, and yes, some are malicious, but not all are, and going for a year without paying attention to what was going on was what you did wrong. eBay know that some buyers take the mick, and they give a bit of leeway before banning. They warn you. They let you know that you are reaching the end of the road. But at some point, they have to kick you off - because every poor transaction, every disappointed buyer, is a loss not only to you but to the whole site. That's me, Soo, all the other respectable and responsive sellers...all lose out because someone sent them something they weren't happy with or didn't post for ages or whatever.

The best thing to do is look back over your original banned account, work out what was going wrong without being defensive about it, and then apply any lessons learned to your new selling activities on Facebook or Preloved or whatever. Be a bit self-critical and you might be able to start again elsewhere. But I don't think it's a terribly good idea to try getting back onto eBay. I don't think it's right that half the people replying to this thread are actively trying to break their rules. There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

Crowqueen, the above may be well intended, but it can be interpreted as rather patronising.

It may be that LydiaSophia has regularly failed to deliver a service - or it may be that she has encountered a run of opportunists - or a mixture of the two. We're in no place and have no evidence on which to judge.

A friend of mine set up an eBay account about 2 years ago and sold a number of highish value household items. She ran into a succession of bullies and opportunists who attempted all kinds of ways to undermine her. Probably being a new seller and selling high value items attracted a few vultures to try their luck.

Most of the time, the methods were unsophisticated and failed, for example, literally sending a message of 'do X or I will leave you a negative' happened more than once.

She was unaware that it was explicitly against an eBay policy - until I explained to her - and she got on to eBay, so it was removed/intercepted. She was also unaware that bidders could be blocked and how simple it was!

Out of her first 30 sales, 3 or 4 buyers were trouble and looking to take advantage. Her descriptions were transparent and honest, and perhaps she maybe was so honest that she looked naive, but the messages I saw left me in no doubt that the problems she was encountering were not of her making.

Fortunately, we were able to nip these in the bud, but had she been left to her own devices, she would undoubtedly have ended up with 4 negatives and 4 very low DSRs out of 30, which (particularly as a new seller) I suspect would have probably been enough to land her with a warning - or a ban - and none of it would have been down to seller failures.

  • Crowqueen - I don't think your being fair at all.
I post everything the next working day and as I've said never send out anything I wouldn't be happy to get!!
I have been really unlucky with poeple marking me down for no other reason that to be mean!
I have been banned for no good reason so yes I am very upset!

I do find this rather patronising - it actually confirms the OP's suggestion that ebay only want the big sellers. They only want people who can keep up?? - As a small occassional seller I can keep up with my description, postage etc and my feedback and stars are excellent -thankfully -because all it takes is a buyer to give me 1 stars for the rot to start to set in. If I was unfortunate enough to sell more than one item to a rubbish buyer then they could do worse damage. And what are my options if I do get a warning? To sell, sell, sell? I have little to sell and can't afford free p&p. I also have to spend time blocking any seller or buyer that I may have upset incase they trash my stars.

Wake up and smell the coffee? - Do you not think that ebay are giving us a bad service? Allowing buyers to rate a seller both anonymously and on a whim is one thing - but using those ratings to restrict or ban an account is pretty rubbish service in my eyes.

They have to kick you off because we lose customers for big sellers like yourself? Please get down from your high horse. - Ebay allow big sellers to sell counterfeit goods and don't kick them off. - I am currently having to deal with a very awkward power seller but it will not affect their stars and they won't be kicked off.

I am a respectable and responsible buyer and seller - however not all buyers are and there is no doubt that stars can be maliciously trashed. Yes buyers have power in shops - selling outlets etc but where else could I single handedly trash some seller to the point of losing their account forever?
So you're Red John? I have to say I'm a little disappointed.
  • The star system is quite frankly, ridiculous. The fact buyers don't ujderstand how it works and can effectively ruin your business and get you a lifetime ban is absurd.

I used to advertise a code which could get you a large percentage of money off a well known popular site. The listing had all the information you needed, in clear concise bullet points. Auction started at 0.01p. One buyer out of 100 trashed my stars and left negative feedback. This happended on my other account to. So out of every 1000 10 people would leave me negative feedback for saving them money! I'd then end up with a lifetime ban from ebay.

The system is severly flawed in favour of the buyer/big power seller.

Have you looked at your expanded dashboard, what areas did your buyers mark you down on?

We must always remember that we have the same pool of buyers, if all buyers are mean and nasty why aren't we all banned? There might still be an outside chance of appealing your first account, it really depends on your expanded dashboard and what that looks like.

It is a shame you traded on a second account when already banned as depending on your expanded dashboard we may have been able to offer you some suggestions about appealing- some areas are easier than others. It might just have been that you got some low stars and then stopped selling, that in itself is a mistake often made by someone not understanding the expanded dashboard.

AS you can see I am fairly obsessed with the expanded dashboard, i fear that unless sellers know it is there and regularly check things that more people will be suspended an dnot have the first idea why.

I don't think the system of penalties for low stars favours the buyer at all. If the data were used for customer information only, so we could make up our own minds, that would be favouring the buyer. Ebay doesn't care about buyers any more than it cares about sellers: it only cares about profit.
When I studied research skills at college years ago, I remember being taught that meaningful statistics generally require a sample of at least 1,000. Sellers with thousands of transactions p.a. are likely to find that everything averages out to reflect their performance reasonably accurately, whereas low volume sellers are much more vulnerable (conversely, some may have anomalously high scores, but can't achieve TRS status unless they also meet sales targets).
I would recommend that the OP reads the thread about checking the expanded seller dashboard, and also studies their policies on eBay itself before attempting to persuade them to reconsider. Tbh all the grovelling in the world probably won't help at this stage, but nothing is lost if they say no. I advise against any attempts at opening another account or using an account belonging to another member of the same household.

I am not sure we all have the same pool of buyers depending on what we sell - especially if I am a small seller offering one off personal/household items. I do not think all sellers are bad but if you are a small seller it can hurt more.

AS you can see I am fairly obsessed with the expanded dashboard, i fear that unless sellers know it is there and regularly check things that more people will be suspended an dnot have the first idea why.

I am grateful that you are - because before I read your thread i did not understand the implications of the stars and i fear that buyers do not understand the implications particularly if they do not sell.

and remember, if you see an issues starting DON'T STOP SELLING hard to do if you are a small seller :(

I do not know whether the OP is a good, bad, ugly or indifferent seller so i am not trying to defend them but i agree that the odds are stacked against the small seller.
So you're Red John? I have to say I'm a little disappointed.
