"This means the problem lies with your ethernet cable or the router. My laptop can connect to the Netgear network so the router seems to be working OK although it can't connect to the internet."

Sorry if this sounds pedantic, but we can't see what you can see, so we have to re-confirm things sometimes....

When you say that the laptop connects to the router OK, is this using the same yellow ethernet cable that came with the router, or wirelessly? If it is connecting OK with the same ethernet cable (and the light comes on on the router), then the cable cannot be faulty, and and the problem must lie with an incorrect connection to the PC (very likely), or a faulty network card (unlikely).

If the laptop usually connects wirelessly, try connecting it with the ethernet cable. If that doesn't work, get another ethernet cable.

I was only connecting my laptop wirelessly and didn't think of your very good idea of using the ethernet cable. I have just done that and the ethernet cable works and the lights came on! So obviously there is a fault with the connection to the PC which I thought it might be, still waiting for Mesh to get back to me on this. Thanks.

OK, we are making progress - we now know that neither the router or cable are faulty :)

While you are waiting for Mesh to respond, there are still a couple of things that you can try.

    1. Back in post #5, you said "Says 'LAN or High Speed Internet' and is connected so no luck with that". Was that with the desktop PC connected to the router using the ethernet cable, or did you still have the PC connected to the speedtouch modem via USB at that point?

If it was connected to the speedtouch, try disconnecting from the speedtouch, connect to the router using the ethernet cable, and check the status of the network connection again.

Also confirm whether you have the Windows firewall, or some other firewall (ZoneAlarm, Norton or McAfee internet security etc) installed and turned on. If so, try disabling them while you try to connect to the router. They can usually be re-enabled after you have successfully connected.

Finally, ensure that your network card is setup to be allocated an IP address by the router - Right-click the network connection on the laptop, select properties, scroll down the list of network protocols until you get to the (usually) bottom one which is called 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'. Click on it once to select it (turns blue), then click the Properties button. On the new window which appears, make sure that 'obtain an IP address automatically' is selected.

In fairness, the above suggestions are unlikely to help if your PC's network card has a hardware fault - but they will do no harm and at least will pass the time until Mesh's legendary helpdesk finally wake up and answer :)

Simple answer without any tech stuff:

    Your Network Card is stuffed.

Get a spare, place in a spare slot and see how that works. If it does, take out the one thats not working and throw it in the bin,

More simple answer is you still got that
usb modem and software on your machine.
Believe it or not crossing over from usb modem to rj45
can be a pain, even when all settings are correct.

Use laptop to get the netgear online and uninstall
usb modem stuffs on PC. Clean registry, restart PC.

Input routers ip address in tcp/ip & maybe restart.

It will kick in, sometimes takes a while to settle!

Just been to Contol Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Other Devices and next to where it says Ethernet Controller is a black ! in a yellow circle which isn't good. When I go to properties it says the driver is not installed. When I click Reinstall Driver it doesn't find one. Any ideas please?

Don't you have a CD which came with the PC containing the drivers? If not, then you should be able to download the required driver for your network card from somewhere on the web.

Go back to Contol Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Other Devices, click once to select the network card and then hit Delete on your keyboard.

Restart, and Windows will automatically detect the network card and try to install the drivers. If it fails to find the drivers, you will have to take the case off and tell us what make / model of network card you have (or make and model of motherboard if it is an integrated card). We will then be able to point you to where you can download and install the correct drivers.
