No Ethernet Connection Found

Options
Hi,

I have just bought a Netgear DG834G router and it works fine but the LAN port does not light up when the ethernet cable is plugged in. I think this is due to my PC not supporting ethernet but I'm not totally sure. Please can someone tell me how to fix this problem and do I need to buy any more equipment.

I am connected by USB at the moment.

Thanks,
Ollie

What are you connecting the ethernet to, one end to the router I'm assuming and the other end? What's connected by USB at the moment?

Ethernet connects from router to computer. USB is from computer then to Speedtouch thingy then to ASDL line and phone socket.

If your pc has an ethernet socket then it supports ethernet. I'd check in your network settings (assuming XP), control panel, network setting, network connections and make sure the LAN/ethernet is enabled.

Says 'LAN or High Speed Internet' and is connected so no luck with that. Any other ideas please?

I take it you're replacing your Speedtouch with the Netgear to run broadband for your PC and wireless? The Netgear should have an ADSL cable to connect to your ADSL filter instead of the Speedtouch. You'll need to disconnect the Speedtouch from your phone line and PC and use the Netgear instead. There should be an easy setup guide with it. Usually you connect the ADSL cable to the router and then an ethernet cable from the router to your PC. Your ethernet connection on the PC should be set to obtain an IP address and DNS settings automatically under properties, Internet Protocol (IP) settings. If the Ethernet is hooked up correctly you should see a light on the router indicating the port is up.

The quick set up guide should tell you where to go from here.

Yes The Netgear should have an ADSL cable to connect to your ADSL filter instead of the Speedtouch. You'll need to disconnect the Speedtouch from your phone line and PC and use the Netgear instead. There should be an easy setup guide with it. I just unplugged the ASDL cable from the Speedtouch and plugged it into the router, so using the same ASDL cable. Usually you connect the ADSL cable to the router and then an ethernet cable from the router to your PC. Doing that. Your ethernet connection on the PC should be set to obtain an IP address and DNS settings automatically under properties, Internet Protocol (IP) settings. Correct. If the Ethernet is hooked up correctly you should see a light on the router indicating the port is up. This is the problem, it is not lighting up.

The quick set up guide should tell you where to go from here.

I think it is a problem with my PC accepting the ethernet cable.

    Thanks for the help.

Are you sure you're plugging it into the ethernet port of your pc?

There is only one port that fits it so I take it its the right one.

Sounds right, they've changed the colour!

Do you get any lights on the back of the ethernet slot on the PC?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
