What is my family entitled to after loosing a job

What are we entitled to: I am newly self employed earning just £2,500 a year working 10 hours a week.

My husband has been made redundant (did earn £42,000) now nothing.

we have 2 children (aged between 5-10). we have a mortgage.

overall income is only £2,500 a year until he finds a job!

I know we can have council tax benefit, child benefit. & will apply for some type of job seekers and child tax credit

But is their any other benefits... we have paid alot of taxes over the years & feel like we're not getting much back!

CAB were not much help!!

that sounds about it im afraid.
  • Do you have a home other than you live in or savings over £6 - £16K?

If not then you will get income based JSA (as opposed to contribtion based JSA).

This entitles you to other benefits like SMI (Help with mortage after 12 weeks), and Child Tax Credits based on now as opposed to over the year earnings.
  • scary dont know how we'l manage with £2,000 worth of bills a month and 4 mouths to feed!

I wonder how much child tax credits we'll get??

As I said if savings (and his redundancy will count towards this) you will get zero tax credits. If you have under £6K savings more help is available as you qualify for income based JSA.

I know it's harsh (been there and got the T - Shirt). When you pay so much in taxes and you need help you get nothing!

But I can't change the way it is, wish I could.

Also to point out that after six months it will be income based JSA which looks at the complete household income and savings.
Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Did OH get a redundancy payoff? Won't that pay down some of the bills?

Work out a SOA and post it on the debt free wannabe board - you'll find more help and support there.

No only the house we live in and no savings :o(

The SMI will help with the interest on our mortgage which is good but I hope he has a job by then.
  • PS - A bit after the horse has bolted scenario but..

When he gets a new job please look at income protection. It gives me complete peace of mind to know I have 90% of salary paid for 12 months and is a very small premium to pay.

It may not help now, but as you have worked out help to maintain current lifestyle is zero, so self insurance is the way to go.

Did CAB not advise you to claim those benefits then? Anyway, if you (as a couple) are entitled to any income related JSA then the children can get free school meals. Plus you would get help with mortgage interest after 13 weeks. If you're not entitled to any income based JSA you would get no help with the mortgage.

More info about benefits and you can work out what you're entitled to at http://www.turn2us.org.uk/

Only statutory redundancy (£2,500 which has gone towards a van & tools he will need to get work in)
