  • Do you have savings over £6K and more than £16K or a house you own and don't live in?

Until you answer that we can't advise more.
  • PS - A bit after the horse has bolted scenario but..

When he gets a new job please look at income protection. It gives me complete peace of mind to know I have 90% of salary paid for 12 months and is a very small premium to pay.

It may not help now, but as you have worked out help to maintain current lifestyle is zero, so self insurance is the way to go.

He had income protection but it was pricey so we lowered it to just protection if he was sick

No only the house we live in and no savings :o(

The SMI will help with the interest on our mortgage which is good but I hope he has a job by then.

Sorry it wasn't showing on my PC at the time.

In that case apply for Income Based JSA for SMI

You get free school meals, full tax credits, and SMI after 12 weeks.

You'd have been truly stuffed if you had savings!

Good luck with his job hunt or Self Employment.

    It's not a lot of help I know :(

We pay £23 pm for £2400 pm income so for us was worth it.
  • Did CAB not advise you to claim those benefits then? Anyway, if you (as a couple) are entitled to any income related JSA then the children can get free school meals. Plus you would get help with mortgage interest after 13 weeks. If you're not entitled to any income based JSA you would get no help with the mortgage.

More info about benefits and you can work out what you're entitled to at http://www.turn2us.org.uk/

I did a benefits check on-line (which was when I learnt how little help we get!)

I guess im worrying because my business is from home and if we loose our house, I loose my business!

  • about 100 pw i think. ( its usually 50 £ ish per child) x
The feeling i got when i confirmed my place studying criminology at Exeter Uni was brilliant!!!!!

The pride my children told me they had in me was even better!!!!! # setting positive example to children is OUTSTANDING!!!! !:grouphug::grouphug::smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea
  • Its about 75 for first child then 40 for 2nd.

Do a turn to us with your income and JSA only (don't use last years figures).

Yeah it's a chicken and egg situation. Until he is eligible for income based JSA they won't listen.

Eg If I was redundant I'd get zero - as not entitled to Income Based JSA to savings, so until you are given income based JSA they won't alter the tax credit's as you need income based to "passport" the Tax Credits over the annual threshold.
