He has applied for being self employed from Dec 3rd, in the hope he might get the odd small job (carpenter) can he still claim job seekers if he has no work for that week/month with maybe the odd job that might come up??
Can he claim for contribution & income based job seekers then?
If he was self-employed how would he meet the criteria for Jobseekers Allowance? Is he prepared to take full time employment regardless of the self-employment?
If he can meet all the criteria then any 'odd jobs' could be treated as part-time work provided they do not impinge on jobseeking. Basically he would need to declare any income, which would be deducted (less a disregard) from the JSA payment, and hours worked. Also, if he worked 16 hours or more in one week the claim would be closed.

Might be worth looking into the New Enterprise Allowance, which has it's own JSA rules, but you have to be on JSA for a period to qualify for that.

He would rather be employed, full time but hasn't found a job yet.

It all sounds rather confusing - I guess we'll have to explain our situation at the first JSA meeting and see what they advise ( or let me guess - they won't advise - in fact knowing our luck they'll be unhelpful!? )
  • Who is your mortgage with?

Some lenders (such as NW) allow you to take overpayments back. Is this an option worth exploring?
    Thinking critically since 1996....

  • I am not familiar with them but certainly worth asking - I have no idea how they treat the overpayments.

  • Ok so had the letter today he will get Income based Job seekers at £82 a week, but even though they know I dont earn much it didnt say if I earn a certain amount in a week they would stop his?

He has self employed work for the next 2 weeks which will cancel out the job seekers, which he'll declare at his next appointment with them.

Regarding Mortgage interest help, does he have to be on continuous job seekers for 13 weeks with no break OR will it allow for the odd temporary jobs he may get?

We wont get any child tax credits until April as he's allready earnt the limit this year _pale_

Have just applied for free school meals... I wonder if theirs anything else we can claim?? (council tax sorted)
