What is my family entitled to after loosing a job

  • something else im now concerned about!

my husband has just resisted self employed (he dated in December) as he was told a sub-contracting job may be coming up then.

How does it work if he claims job seekers but he may or may not also have the odd week of work to do as self employed whilst he's looking for a full time job?

As you can tell were both new to this
  • Yeah it's a chicken and egg situation. Until he is eligible for income based JSA they won't listen.

Eg If I was redundant I'd get zero - as not entitled to Income Based JSA to savings, so until you are given income based JSA they won't alter the tax credit's as you need income based to "passport" the Tax Credits over the annual threshold.

so does that mean I (he) applys for JSA before we apply for Tax credits then?

Yes - but they will likely be paid at the same time as TC are quicker than JSA

Expect to use savings and fresh air for a few weeks!

Wish I could be more optimistic for you, but I am a realist.

He can apply to offset under his JSA earnings over SE. But.. if you are expecting to go SE, he may be better dealing with Tax Credits only. But free school meals etc are not available if not getting Income based JSA.

He's two months in arrears so that should help out for a bit

    Dealing with tax credits only??

What is the cut-off for Income based job seekers?
  • The cut off is £111 pw for both of your earnings.

It's decision time to either go SE for both of you and rely on Tax Credits or if using JSA to deal with their regime,

Ie he will need to sign on (and you) seek work as they see necessary, do work programmes and to send CV's phone employers and others in your JSA agreement.

Any work over £71 for him will need declared and won't get anything if over the limits and and will be deducted less a £5 disregard.

As I say decision time. Is he self employed or job seeking?

Im allready self employed working a few hours from home earning aprox £75 a week. So if he earn't £36 a week or more he wouldn't get JSA? -

That's right you wouldn't be entitled to income based if together your earnings were £111.
