Hi,
After our plans of buying an old house to do up we're considering going to the other end of the spectrum and buy a new build.
Taylor wimpey has posed a very tempting offer on a four bed detached on one of their new sites.
I'm just after any up to date opinions/advice on buying from TW... The house isn't built yet so obviously there's nothing to look at!! Would it be rude to knock on a few doors of the houses that have been bought and ask them about how they feel about their purchase??
I'm aware of all the usual snag list stuff. If anyone has bought and lived in one of their houses for a few years I'd be grateful if you could comment on your experience.
Thanks..

No need. Just stand outside and whisper; they'll hear you through the paper-thin walls.0 -

Really check the room sizes. I haven't bought from Taylor Wimpey, but did look at their showhomes when buying my house. One thing I noticed was that the rooms did not have doors, presumeably to make the rooms feel bigger.
I also remember being in the main bedroom and saying to my husband that something wasn't quite right but I wasn't sure what. I lay down on the bed, with my head touching the headboard. My feet were hanging over the end and I'm only 5'2" tall! Seems they had special small furniture made, again to make the rooms look big.
Good Luck.0 -

I'm not trying to start an argument, genuine question....
Just from what I've heard from others. There was a thread started on here yesterday I believe. That's not to say they're worse than other developers, I don't know, but that's not saying much.0 -
I think this is a good point. I live in a new build and I am very fortunate the insulation is amazing and I can't hear my neighbours at all (despite there being 2 children under 5 years old!). As the house isn't built yet, you should ask to see a property they have build either the showhome or perhaps another property at another site. That will give you an idea of build quality - all developers vary massively.0

Definitely do this. Most new owners will be only too happy to speak to you.0 -

Same here.
Ours is detached so no neighbours to worry about.
Our house is a Barratt home and we have had no problems with it at all!!! we up-spec'd all the interior finishes and went for Neff appliances for the kitchen which they allowed us to do.
So if the idea of neighbours is a concern go for a detached property.
As for the room sizes, we don't have this issue. (Not sure if that's just taylor wimpey?) for example our lounge is around 8mx12 so not small!
Good luck in your searchDEBT FREE AND PROUD'Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt'0 -
I'm buying with TW just now. Completion in December. So far I have been very happy with everything. I chose the house before it had started to be built but I looked at the showhouse and viewed a house that was up for sale second time round with a normal seller.0

Have a TW new build, completed in June. No noise issues, we're detached anyway, but when the windows are closed you can barely hear anything from outside.
The showhome we saw had proper size furniture, and doors on all rooms, because I measured one of their sofas and one of the beds when I was trying to work out what furniture we could fit where.
There were minor snagging issues only, and the site manager has been incredibly helpful. We were one of the later stages of the development, so I suspect all the major issues were flushed out early on. You do get some noise from ongoing building, if that is still being done, but I have found all the TW people to be very considerate. The utilities and road surfaces somewhat less so - the roads are being done at the moment and it has been a nightmare for the last two weeks, but it isn't really TWs fault.
My only gripe with them really was that they were not great at keeping us updated as to how the build was going, but the sales staff changed a fair bit, and messages seemed to get misplaced.0 -
Well today I went to the site and spoke to a resident.
I explained my situation and concerns with new builds/developers.
Shes had no problems and she is happy with her house. She viewed her house a few times during the building stage and her husband is happy with the build quality. The whole process went smoothly. She also said that there were a couple of snags which she reported to the site manager (who she referred to using his first name, not 'site manager') and he arranged for the snags to be fixed the next day, which they were. She said the whole site is kept clean and tidy, the roads are jet washed every night and the workmen are considerate and polite.
She knows a few couples who had moved in and none of them have mentioned any problems either... Apart from a few snags.
All in all, a good report!0
