We all compete in a global market and we need to realise that protectionism has never worked and will never work.

There's plenty of countries where protectionism is still operated. Unfortunately the fair play of the British counts for little in business.

you suggest that it's easy to become chancellor? i don't think he got his peerage by donating 2m to the tory party....

Oh! I see, he's right just because he's a lord, not because he made a pigs ear of boom and bust when he was chancellor.

he was en ex chancellor.... i'd imagine his opinion on the benefits and disadvantages of the EU are worth listening to.

ok, you could argue there have been better chancellors, but there certainly have been worse (brown)

I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

    PMSL, especially at this quote:
they are increasingly sighted across England, going door to door for Ukip. Extinct in Scotland.
    especially in light of this:

it's called freedom of movement of labour and it's a good thing. Many UK employers are desperate for people with certain skillsets so please let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Those struggling to find work need to honestly appraise their own skills. Maybe their maths needs work, or their written English, or their analytical skills, so find whatever area you're worst at and improve it, and then move onto the next, and the next.

Trying to close borders to keep out the (jolly impressive!) competition is ultimately doomed.

Local Toyota factory allegedly doesn't want guys over 25 on the production line, and won't take them over 30 - they can't run fast enough. Thats all very well for Toyota, but then the country has to pay benefits to the guys over 30.
For the sake of the country you need some protectionism. I can't think of any country with a strong economy that allows unfettered immigration?

Even if true (and I have my doubts) that tells us little about the more general case.

Perhaps not, but it's something we should be trying to move towards rather than backing away from.
