Already posted this one elsewhere.
Troubled by slugs chomping your plants?
Buy a length of 15mm or 22mm copper tube and some 90 degree elbows. Construct a square large enough to encircle the base of the plant leaving at least 4" all round from copper to plant base. Press copper square into soil to ensure no gaps underneath. Wet soil, job done.
Alternatively id your having to protect lots of plants, buy a roll of 10mm microbore copper tubing and cut to length as required.0 -
Copper is really expensive here in Holland, and it gets stolen no end! (honestly, not kidding!)
So I'm battling the slugs in a less humane way I'm afraid.
I put a pot down into the soil in such a way that the rim is level with the ground. Poor in a bit of beer. (cheepest stuff I can find!) and leave.
SLugs are attracted by the smell of it, fall into the pot. Drink it.. and then can't get back out so they drown.. or drink themselves to death I dunno.
Either way, it works.
I empty the pot once every couple of days or so and add fresh beer when needed.0 -

Ellawood: Lettuce is slugs favorite meal!
If it's hung up high it'll discourage them a little bit, but not always. Have a good check around your area. Close to where your plants are growing. Are there any heavy leafy plants? Plants that grow along the ground, or plastic bags with compost or such? Slugs like to retreat into the shade during the day and those are fab places for them to live. So if you keep the area close to your veg as clear as possible, there's less chance that the slugs get the idea that you are the local MacSlug restaurant.
Those critters like and will eat pretty much everything. Except my potatoes actually. I've not seen them touch those...
They don't seem too keen on the tomatoes either.
Pumpkin however.... pffff  Slugfeast!
