Even cheaper then Mr T's lager, ferment water with a bit of sugar and yeast (fresh or dried). Takes a couple of days in an old pop bottle with the lid on loose (tighten it to shake twice a day and then loosen again).

thanks for this - i have some yeast that is probably no longer any use for baking (the baking phase didn't last very long!)

SALT I was plagued by slugs and snails...did you know that when the ground gets too hard they go up your walls drain pipes even my windows...:mad:I go out on a night with a bucket of salt water pick up as many snails as I can see and put them in the salt water...if they are around the house wall I just sprinkle salt on them and watch them melt...yuk...the residue is awful...but I had loads even going in and out of the garage the neighbours thought I was bonkers out on a night with a torch and salt and a bucket of salt water...but who cares I have hardly any now...it works but it could take awhile...:rotfl:

I have a complete phobia of slugs - if I see one, I will scream. I've found the Growing Success ones that make them crawl away (so I don't have to see them!) and die to be brilliant. They're also certified organic, which is something of a bonus (I never set out to be organic, I just never really feel the need to use fertilisers etc)

    The tape worked for me.

I read somewhere that you had to make the tape spiky for snails. So I cut some in the tape I used. Then I put the tape around two plant pots that contain plants that I knew the slugs and snails would like to eat. Moved the plants to ensure no other leaves or plants touched them. I then went out a few times last year and noticed a nice ring of slugs and snails around the plants. :D
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

Two chickens decimated our (considerable) slug population within weeks of their arrival.

Of course, the downside being that they poo a hell of a lot but then we get delicious free range organic eggs!

i know this works - favourite method of my grandfathers, walking around with a pot of salt to sprinkle. so going by this theory would a line of salt round the plants work? i know i line of crushed egg shells or corse sand is supposed to deter as they don't like the sharp surface. But would a ring of salt round the plants work similar or would this b no good for the soil and plants?

i bought a few rolls of the copper tape from wilkinsons last year taped all the legs on my planters and bottom of pots round baskets i went a bit mad and taped anything that had plants growing in it i even wiped the tape so it stayed nice and shiny BUT the slugs and snails still got to my plants:mad:

Hope you have better luck with the tape.

    Abseiling snails.
Truly. Go out after dark with a torch and you'll see.

Something had been having a nibble on my tomato and lettuce leaves in my greenhouse, so armed with a bottle of larger and a yoghurt pot I set the trap!!! Half a bottle for the trap, the other for me ;-)

This morning the culprit was found floating within the yoghurt pot.... so long snail. Gav 1 Snail/Slugs 0 Let the battle commence.

I wouldn't put salt around the plants as it'l wash in and could poison the plant you want to save!speechless-smiley-040.gif

Sis told me she had lots of luck with the pellets that they prefer then go away to die, V Chic Chick's suggestion. I'm getting some this year cos I don't like melted slug everywhere!
