Well, it's all a matter of preference. For bags it wouldn't bother me if it was used, especially if I had then washed it.
Clothes I'm a bit more funny about though.

However, my point about it being washed before resolving the issue is an important one, as a seller shouldn't have to accept a return of an item that is no longer in the same condition as it was sold in (I know kipling bags are supposed to wash well, but it will have altered the bag). This is why I think your only option is to keep it & accept a partial refund.

Yes I know that - but as I have said I wouldn't force the seller to refund me, I would tell her the situation and take it from there. I only washed it because I fully expected to keep it.

Whether I accept a partial refund or return it is a separate issue. What I'm trying to establish is whether or not I'm justified in not wanting a used bag. I suppose I want people to tell me it's fine and they would have no problem with it. It's a lovely colour and I don't know how long I'd have to wait to find another one. I'm just not sure I can get over the doubts.

I know I have the option of accepting a partial refund and selling it on - but I do like the colour. I wouldn't have risked buying one without tags in the first place if it wasn't something hard to find, and something I wanted. That's why the 'bag' issue is more important at the moment than the 'ebay' issue.

I thought people would post that they would happily use a 'used' bag as long as it had been washed, and tell me I'm just being silly.

I bought another one recently, also in a retired colour. It arrived smelling of smoke but the seller insisted it was new and unused and came from a smoke free home (she blamed the smell on the plastic bag, which I suppose is possible, but I'm not entirely convinced). I've washed that one about 3 times now, and I don't think it smells any more. Again, I love the colour and I *think* I'll be ok with it when I get round to using it, but I'm not sure and just need to talk it through with like-minded people.

Nah, that's fair enough to have that opinion about being unsure about used bags :)
Like I say, I'd be happy enough once it came out of the wash - unlike clothing a bag would have less direct contact with skin, so less unhygeinic.

I'm curious about this bag now, what style colour is it?
Not sure why I'm asking if it's no longer available though!

I would be a little miffed though if I had paid a price that I thought was fair for a new item, but would have paid less had I thought it had been used.

I wouldn't have bid at all if I'd thought it was used. I keep looking at it though, and I love the colour so I may just see if I can agree a partial refund and use it for a bit (after I've washed it a couple more times ;)) and see how comfortable I feel about it then.

I'll happily post the style and colour after I've resolved this with the seller - I don't want to risk any mischievous 'lurkers' searching for it and contacting the seller. It's a colour I bought for myself direct from QVC a couple of years ago but then realised I was never going to use it as the style didn't suit me. So I sold mine and then kind of regretted it :o

I guess even when you buy a 'new with tags' bag from ebay there is a chance it's been used - as the tags just tie on, don't they? What's to stop someone using it a couple of times and putting the tags back on? I guess anything bought from ebay is best judged on the condition when you receive it - and probably best given a wash before use regardless!

That's why I prefer Amazon - they sometimes have such bargain prices and you know it's new!

I wondered about those people on here who have bought from Amazon Warehouse? Aren't they supposed to be used bags, or at least returns? Would you think that's similar to this, and I just need to wash it and lighten up???

I'm not concerned about the ebay 'points of law' if you see what I mean. The seller has been nice about it and if I do decide I want to return it I would of course tell her I've washed it and see how she feels about that.

My main concern was whether I'm being too picky about a used bag, and wanted to know what other 'bag ladies' think about this, not what ebay people think about the etiquette of returns etc. If you see what I mean, I want opinions from bag people not ebay people!

The only reason I washed it so quickly was because I was (perhaps naively) convinced she would reply and assure me it was unused and she had no idea about the marks, or maybe say it had just been tested out but not properly used. I think I would have been ok about that, but now she's said she's selling for a freind and she just 'thought' it was unused makes me wonder how used it is (or isn't).
scaredy cat you have your own opinion of course but if it was me i would buy a bag if seller said only used a few times and it is still in excellent condition and i would pop it in the wash just to make me feel better :) Hope that helps you out :)
have now given up smoking since feb 13th 2014 loving the money I'm saving

Thanks. I'm thinking I may just keep it and wash it a couple more times to convince myself it's clean! It looks fine now, it's just the thought that bothers me :undecided

Hey Scardey Cat - not very nice to be deceived but if you can get a decent reduction I'd go with that. If its a colour and bag you like.

Have had one bought used myself - one Kipling and one leather. I washed the leather one and it came out fine - also the Kipling, though it didn't look dirty.

To make to feel better why not give the inside pockets a squirt with something like Dettox or other anti back spray - then wash again and dry and I'd have no problems using it.

When you think of it how clean are the factories in China where they are made - and do the workers always wash their hands - now you have me thinking!

I also bought a second leather bag - good condition but like one of yours absolutely reeked of smoke. I thought I could fumigate it by washing but my bag never lost its stink even after days on the line and repeated washing - so off to charity. Luckily I never spent much for it.

Oh yes I have had quite a few Travelon bags n the past too and just washed and dried and had no qualms about using them.

Its not as if you have loose food or anything in the bags.

I have used a small hand steam cleaner too but thats buried in the attic now.

7roland8 - both brilliant ideas, thank you! I think that's what I'll do then.

I never thought of dettox or anything like that, but I'll see what I've got in the cupboard and give it a try :)

I know what you mean about the smoke smell. It really lingers, doesn't it? I couldn't believe it was still there after I washed the other bag, but I suppose a 30 degree wash isn't quite strong enough. I've read your warnings and didn't dare risk 40 degrees, but I did wash it 3 times on 30 degrees ;)

I tend to do my bags by hand in the sink - after a squirt of anti bac I can then wash it with some baby bath or shampoo and just rinse gently and leave to drip dry on the line - though I have sometimes speeded it up with a hair dryer as I was so eager to put my stuff in!
