Problem is that the whole recruitment process is just a test of who can bull$hit the best. Who can feign the most interest.
It's just a game. It's sad, but true.

Very true. I am very good at my job and a hard worker, but I look really awkward when I lie and I'm sure that has been my undoing at a lot of interviews! When I was a student I had an interview for a Christmas job at Argos. One of the questions was something like, "tell me why you think Argos is the greatest shop in the world?". There had been a lot in the papers at the time about how badly Argos was doing and clearly they are not the greatest shop in the world. I said something about it being quick and convenient to shop there, especially if you are someone who knows what you want. I didn't get the job (not a surprise).

I have a real problem in lying to get a job, or making myself out to be something I am not. I have always preferred honesty and knowing my limitations/weaknesses, things which were at one point, important to employers....they didn't like the blaggers or boasters.

Ditto but these days they force applicants to lie because they won't give a real genuine person a chance!

I think that there are a lot of companies exploiting the Apprenticeships scheme. That is really bad form.

The rest of your post is nonsense.

You or I cannot change the economic situation. The economic situation is unlikely to change anytime soon.

Therefore, we can accept that we are all doomed, or we can stand up and fight (i.e look for appropriate jobs that match our skill set).

Ultimately, companies employ staff for their own benefit. Yes, they should operate ethically, howver, they will almost always pay the least that they can for the best quality candidate that they can get.

it was fact not opinion, so not sure how it can be nonsense.

What is nonsense is supporting a supermarket by saying the jobs there are tsken so it can't be so bad and at the same time saying they are exploiting the apprenticeships scheme, take a look on a job site and you will see the hours offered at supermarkets are some of the lowest in any business.

Supermarkets are entitled to offer whatever hours they feel are necessary to run the type of operation that their customers and shareholders demand.

Your rant-style crusade is admirable, if a bit left-wing, however, can we both agree that's it's not going to get you anywhere.

My consistant point has been that you have to make yourself more attractive than the other candidates in order to get the job / get promoted.

If you feel that upping your game is detrimental to the other candidates and your couldnt possibly stoop to such a low level, then I would prepare yourself for a lifetime of benefits - certainly for the foreseeable future.

Supply and demand will always prevail. At the moment, it's an employers market.

You seem quite angry about employers in general:
    • The application process
    • Rate of pay
    • Availability of jobs
    • Number of hours being offerred
Maybe the self-employed route would suit you better?

wow you have gone full circle :T

I thought we were having a grown up argument but it seems you have decided argument is no longer a winner for you so have now resorted to rudeness.

I won't see or answer any more of your posts, so for my benefit no need to reply.

Not being rude at all. Just an observation. Your posts seem very angry about many aspects of employers in general.

Self employment may work better for you

The worst aspect of the current economic climate is that good candidates will be set aside for the candidates that the employer perceives to be better.

The employer will always choose the best available candidate.

You just need to ensure that you are better than the other applicants.

Interviews can be daunting, but perhaps you could practice with family or friends?

No rudeness in that post but its a good point, if you don't like being an employee why not become an employer and have to pay all the costs that go with it and then offer an employee whatever wage you want.
