never heard of a plastic suspension grommet to cause a fail, in fact the only cover grommet things are to over the top nuts and make it pretty, no safety or structural at all

Grommet, cover, gasket, I don't know, I'm not a mechanic and only half overheard the start of the conversation as they were coming back into the reception area. But it was something simple and cheap to do but Kwik Fit couldn't because company policy was to change the whole component.
  • Hi Lee,

Back on topic. I took my 3 year old Toyota for its first MoT to a National Tyres Auto centre on Saturday. It failed on emissions. I was absolutely shocked. It's covered 18,000 miles and has a full and complete main dealer service history (and is very well looked after).

Looking at the report, the Lambda sensor readings were out of tolerance, which I understand is easy to achieve if the procedure is not followed. I was then offered a £20 fuel treatment and to 'run it up and down the road and come back'.........

At which point I smelt a massive rat and left.

It has now passed having taken it to a Toyota main dealer. No additional work was required.

I have made a complaint to VOSA, but I feel there should be stronger punishments for this....

    Hi,

Kwik Fit MOT tester was saying it was the Lambda sensor too.

He showed me the screen when they were running the test. How do I know that they were just causing it not to reach the correct level to pass.

Also I ran the car up and down the dual carriageway before going to the booked MOT so car should have still been hot.
  • I am no expert, but I spent a lot of theweekend googling. If the probe is not put far up enough the exhaust, it will measure too much oxygen and the reading will be out.

They told me that "the system has changed" and that no one gets emission print outs any more. :rotfl:

I wonder how recent this alleged change was. My test on 25th Oct has one.

That sort of thing is actually changing. Dust cover for anti roll bar linkage ball joint deteriorated and no longer preventing the ingress of dirt, and so on.
  • Just received a cheque in the post from Kwik Fit for the refund of the £20 they scammed out of me for BG44K fuel additive. They claimed I needed it to pass the emissions which was total bull.

Even that is risky as fitting a tyre properly seems to elude them, their balance weights must be made of solid Platinum as they are reluctant to fit enough of them unless forced. I have never had a tyre fitted by Kwikfit that didn't require a test drive to confirm the steering wheel shaking out my hands and a swift return for a proper balance.

I needed a puncture fixed urgently on a 3 tonne transit on a Sunday afternoon, so only had one option... Kwik Fit

I whipped the wheel off, stuck it in the car and took it down, their first words were "We'll have to look because you can't normally plug them." I could see their eyes heading for the tyre price list already. As it stood, it was a nail in the middle of the tread, so I told them I was pretty sure they'd be able to, and if they couldn't, pop it off the rim and I'll plug it myself.

They begrudgingly agreed they'd be able to plug it for free "just pay for fitting and balancing". £15.95 or something like

It was a time of desparation though, so under my watchful eye, they took the tyre off, plugged the hole and refitted, then went to the balancer. Which is where the fun started. On a three tonne transit, you can put your hand through the centrebore on the wheel.... no chance their balancer would be able to handle it.

I let them have a clusterf**k for a couple of minutes, then pointed out the mark I'd made on the wheel and tyre. Got them to take the tyre back off, line these up and refit so the balance was as before.

Then the fee.... Well, they only charge for fitting and balancing. They didn't balance it, and it's against company policy to fit a tyre without balancing, so.....

    No charge! :rotfl:
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

I do not understand anyone falling for the Kwik Fit marketing bullsh1t. If you cannot get a better service and more importantly price from one of your local independants, then you must live somewhere north of the North Pole!

£500 for discs and pads you must of gone via the pub I put some yesterday on a Volvo s40 front discs and pads were £82 and the rears where £49 all in took an hour to do whole job and that included winding in the rear brake calliper pistons
