Kwik Fit MOT/BG44K Scam

Nice interesting story for you all...

Took my car for a discounted MOT to kwik Fit this morning. During the MOT test, they told me it would fail on the emissions unless I buy a can of BG44K fuel additive off them for £20. If it didn't work they wouldn't charge for the additive blah blah..

I said OK even though I knew it all sounded dodgy. They put the additive in and took my car for a spin up the road and back then re-did the emissions test. It passed!

Here's the good bit.. They gave me the MOT receipt minus the emissions print out. I asked where my copy was and they gave me a story about that they only get one copy and that they have to keep it for the records.

I said well this is the first time I've never got an emissions print out with an MOT. In the end they said they would put my car back on the emissions machine and give me a new copy.

They did that and gave me a print out. Not a usual print out, some half baked "MOT station only" copy with "Non-catalyst equipped vehicle" printed on along with LPG as the fuel type when my car is unleaded petrol.

For some reason they didn't want to give me my real emissions print out.

SCAM!

I will be making a complaint to Kwik Fit head office asking for my £20 back and I will be notifying VOSA too.

Check your print out against previous emission test print outs. The LPG emission test has different thresholds and I think one test is skipped completely. Might be some ploy to mask their testing...

Whole things sounds seriously dodgy and big money making scam.
  • Yep I checked it against last years and it doesn't show much detail compared to last years and all other years.

I think the LPG test is visual only. I'll see if I can dig out my emmissions print-out and see what it says.
  • Wouldn't touch kwik fit with a barge pole, you only have to put "kwik fit reviews" into Google to find out why!

Its not hard to find somewhere reputable to get an MOT done for around £30 nowadays.

Surprised you didn't need some discs, pads and the odd tyre for the MOT too! You got away lightly!

Would not use kwick-fit apart from if they price match on tyres and have them that day when others dont.

they told me my track rod ends were knackared when i wanted my tracking done got them checked by my mechanic, guess what nothing wrong with them!
  • No all Kwick-Fit branches are run by cowboys.

I was in our local one getting a new tyre (only because they had it in stock and it needed doing straight away) when a bloke had his MOT done. The car failed, something to do with his suspension. What it boiled down to was a plastic grommet or cover had cracked.

The cost to fix it was £400 as company policy was to replace the whole part.

The guy serving him said that it was only required that the grommet/cover was replace and gave him the number of a local garage that would be able to do it for a fraction of the price.

They quoted me £500 to replace discs and pads. I got the job done at my regular place for £380.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

I've had great service from some branches and terrible from others.

It's more than possible the run up and down the road warmed up the catalytic converter sufficiently to get a borderline case through, without the additive.

I had a race cat fitted to my midlife crisis car and my friendly MoT chap used to take it for a good run before testing.
