It may work in some areas if you are near the transmitter or relay, but most users need a proper rooftop aerial. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Yes. We have Sky+ HD at the moment (which is past the 12 month contract) DH was talking about us saving the £38 per month and going for a Freesat box but i didn't know if we could have one of those (seeing as we have no aerial). We are in an area which doesn't seem to pick up any of the freeview channels (have freeview tv's)
We also didn't know if it was legal to use the sky dish or whether we have to give it back if we don't use sky!DEBT FREE AND PROUD'Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt'0 -
Why on earth did you not tell us this before? What has BT Vision got to do with this?
The Sky box etc is your property.
Pull out your viewing card.
What you can get without it is what you'll receive without a subscription.
If you want to retain the recording facility it will cost you around £10/ month. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Sorry i didn't make myself clear.....:o
I was just trying to give a bit of background to the fact Vision wouldn't work without a rooftop aerial as we had tried it and i din't know whether this freesat thing worked in the same way as vision did......
I read the blurb on the freesat site about connecting to a dish but wondered if this was ok and how easy it would be? (would i need to get someone in to do this?)
DH still wants the HD channels and the pause and record facility which is why we were considering the Freesat box as you get this but without the monthly subscription (saving £38pm)....DEBT FREE AND PROUD'Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt'0 -
The connections on a Freesat box are almost identical to the Sky+ box - so you would disconnect them from the Sky+ box and and reconnect them to the Freesat box.
OTOH, if money's tight you could just do as penrhyn suggested and take the card out of the Sky box and see how you get on with the channels you are left with. That'll give you a rough idea of whether or not to go for a Freesat box to restore your recording capability.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Do as I say pull out your viewing card.
If you cancel your HD sub with Sky you'll still get the BBC and main commercial HD channels. So you'd save £10, get rid of entertainment extra thats another £5 saved. Or ring them to cancel and see if they offer you anything. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Ok, this may be me being thick (probably) if i pull out the viewing card i guess i have to call Sky and cancel my subscription otherwise they're not going to know i'm not using the full package?
Great info on the Freesat thing sounds quite easy....
Edited to say i don't think we'll keep the Sky box at all as we won't be able to record and that's the main function we use....DEBT FREE AND PROUD'Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt'0 -
Its up to you, I suggested pulling out the card so you can see what channels you get without a subscription.
I also told you that you can retain the recording facility by paying Sky £10/ month.
A freesat HD PVR will cost you around £200.
Naturally you will want to buy a Humax and they often have managers specials.

I'd go for the One terror bite one.
