Do I need a soup maker?

  • We got an automatic soup maker for my nan-in-law. She was suffering symptoms of dementia and forgetting to cook properly, so we thought something she could stick on and forget about until it was done.

It worked so well she did indeed forget all about it, right until the blender function switched itself on an hour or so later (with a noise like a bag of spanners in a washing machine) and scared the whatsits out of her.

Not a success. Even those of us with our full complement of marbles found it noisy and awkward to use, and the soup wasn't great either.

Thank you so much! You have saved me from spending money and cluttering my crowded worksurface further. Also I enjoyed the chuckle although I hope your nan recovered.

To be honest I just do not see the point of these other than to part you from your cash.

I make a large pot of soup at least twice a week and it only takes about 5 mins to chop the veg and put it in a pot and add the stock I just leave it to simmer for an hour, cool down a bit the use the stick blender on it.

I just cant see how this would save me any time apart for the 60 seconds at the end when I have to blend it.

I would save your cash to be honest

Don't forget, too, it's an electric gadget - if you've got a gas cooker, then you're already paying less to cook your soup on the hob :T.

This is a very good point. If I use the slow cooker it won't be too bad, and our gas is a bit odd, but gas is definitely cheaper!

I make my own can't be any easier or simpler than chopping some veg, adding meat, lentils etc. in a bit of stock and simmering it over the hob in a saucepan.

Have a lack of time and like the idea of not having to watch it?

Don't need to watch it bring to the boil and then set it simmering, go back after 20 - 30 mins.
Prep time less than 5 mins
