Without a slowcooker LadyDee you're missing out on one of the better kitchen gadgets.
Like Valkscot, I dislike slowcookers - I totally agree that it makes everything the same texture. I'd much rather a quick stir-fry or something for dinner than an over-stewed pot of mince, etc.

With regards the microwave pressure cookers, I'd also be concerned with the volume and also, frankly, the ineffectiveness of such gadgets. Therefore, I'd also recommend a normal pressure cooker (if you have the hob) and a stick blender if you want blended soups... a good, sharp knife if not - it really doesn't take five minutes to chop a few carrots.

Personally, it's a pot and a good sharp knife (or my triblade blender for thicker soups) for me. I have soup in 20 minutes.

However, if you don't want to have a normal pressure cooker, and as you're determined to have one or the other, I'd have the soup maker (though I've never used one).

    To summarise the thread...

Most people like a pan/pressure cooker/slow cooker with blender if necessary.
Some people like a soup maker but it is an expensive choice.
No one likes microwave pressure cookers.

But the OP is looking for someone to tell her that she should buy a microwave pressure cooker and any other responses are just an irritation to her.

    Does that sound about right?

[btw another vote for making soup on the hob here... and I've been making do with temporary camping/plug-in hobs for 18months due to building works!]
  • Isn't there a pressure cooker that looks/functions like a slow cooker (as in plug in, ignore until timer goes) - could that be worth a look?
  • I would love something I could just fill up, switch on and leave. Is that a realistic idea? I have seen an offer for one at a reduced price of £56. It would be ideal for lunches, but worried it would be another unused gadget taking counter space.

I do sometimes make home made soup, but not as often as I should, and I don't want to be standing over a pot when I need to be getting on with other stuff.

I would be grateful if anyone who has used one could give feedback. Many thanks

I do have a slow cooker. I don't have a liquidiser or stick blender. I never think of putting things in a slow cooker for lunch, but I think bendy veg soup would be fine. Thank you.

Slow cooker is the way imo. I make all sorts of soups, stews and other dishes in ours. For something like leek and potato soup, a quick whizz with the stick blender at the end and job done. A large slow cooker and a stick blender would be way less than £56 too, more like £25.

I would go with the slow cooker and stick blender advice. Stick blenders barely cost a tenner these days x

Mr T has a value one for £5, this is what I use, it's absolutely fine x
  • Thank you - I can see a stick blender making a much smaller dent in the shopping list!

Edited to add - I suppose that I am used to the idea that slow cookers take all day. Bendy veg soup would only take a few hours, I suppose. When would you start a slow cooker off for a lunchtime soup? Or am I fretting too much?
