We were too poor to have a phone.
We had a tv with only BBC1 on it though and a big wireless. Nobody had central heating just one coal fire for the whole house. We used to have frost on the inside of our windows and get dressed to go to bed, including hat, socks and jumpers. I think Dickens must have based many of his novels on our family!
Lol, I grew up in the 70s in London, we had no central heating, no coal fire, all we had was an upright heater which blew out air and we moved it from room to room to warm them. We had coats on the beds on top of the blankets and often had on the windows. I always roar at the Billy Connolly joke where he talks about getting his leg stuck in the arm of the coat - that was us! We rented a colour tv, after being burgled we had a black and white portable for a few years.0 -
I remember my sister and I getting walkie talkie dolls....they were as big as us and were the scariest ruddy things ever!!!
They "walked" like they were wearing calipers and you made them "talk" by pulling a string on their back and they could have been talking swahili for all the sense they made
Oh I had one of those and tiny tears
We got one present for Xmas day
Kids today have no clue what it was all aboutSmileand hopefully the world will smile back

If we had coal you where only warm/burning within about 3 foot of the fire the rest of the house was freezing literally.
Going to bed once I had pulled the numerous blankets over me I could not roll over as they where too heavy:eek: if it was not for the fact I had rested during the night I ould not of had the strength to push them off.
My 2 walking around the house in shorts as we speakhave no idea
No and they laugh at you when you tell them stories. They think you are taking the michael. They have not got a clue- but in many ways life is harder for them nowadays because the bar has been raised in every walk of life. Used to be you could get in to uni with carp grades....not anymore. Teaching them MSE ways is a super education for them even if you can afford to give them everything on a plate.never stop doing your best because someone doesn't give you credit0 -

I had forgotten about the coats on top of the bed. Did that too and for quite a while we had an outside loo at the bottom of the garden. But I also remember going sledging at 11.00 p.m. in the moonlight and seeing foxes watching us!!0 -
