If you're single you don't get to use hair dye, beauty products are just for mums, dads, grandparents and etcs.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

    That explains the singledom....:rotfl:

Can we have this thread moved elsewhere? I will happily rant and take the pee on this thread but I don't want to be on this board:o:D

Advantage is your word not mine, neither said nor intimated. Gave my opinion FWIW on single parents and the Singletons board already today :)

Difficult to view not being whipped as not being an advantage, I took what you said to be a complaint rather than a measure of appreciation, but I guess each to their own :rotfl:

Well I will be mostly out on a limb and say its about time :D

I hate the way the families board went down the route of another general chat board where it was actually difficult to pick out the posts that had any money saving tips/advice in at all almongst the moan threads and the general chit chat. Dont get me wrong I love a good natter about nothing important but that has a place and that place is the arms. No other forum that I know that has a specific function has the option to chat about x factor or celebrity or my dreadful day/dreadful partner/awful kids anywhere other than the allocated place.

And that's what has made MSE special.

Whilst financial matters are the main crux of the site, don't lets kid ourselves that the regulars stay because of them. This site is a success because it caters for a wide demographic.

I completely understand that some may prefer the more factual money related type threads but the answer to that is simply to have a Family money board and a Family 'all else' board. Much in the same way there are Tesco vouchers (no chat) and Tesco vouchers (chat/all else) boards. (Not sure from memory if those are the exact titles but you know what I mean.)

The Arms will never be a suitable place for many of us to chat about stuff, it's frequented by a different group of people. Human beings tend to naturally congregate with others who are like minded.

  • This feels completely wierd - I post mainly on the Hoarding & Greenfingers threads and now feel somewhat labelled as my offsprung are over 30 now, so I am what ... a singleton? But most of the experiences I have to share are related to being a small family

The 2 threads used to be side by side which was handy LOL!

I do find the world is very family based, (and have always made sure that social groups I helped run were aware of how this could disadvantage single people) and we are sidelined so maybe, just maybe, this will become the place to find out offers and examples of places where we are treated as a worthwhile consumer (no, SAGA I don't mean you, I mean half price offers instead of 2 for the price of one, or family bulk reductions)

When I was a single mum I wrote to big companies to educate them how much per head I had to pay compared with their family tickets and several gave me equal reductions
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow
  • Singles working full-time and running a household alone, won't be getting any benefits (£6.25/hour for 40 hours/week takes them over the threshold).

Evening study is a rarity in itself. Distance learning is possible, but very long-winded and lonely - and, for most, unaffordable.

I have self funded to now - did my HNC first (2 year evening classes whilst working 2 jobs) and finished my HND last year (distance learning).

Since physically going to Uni is out - it looks like distance learning is the only option for that too.

Cost = approx £5k..... where am I supposed to find that from?

Can't get a loan as the amount left after all bills etc are paid isn't enough! (and TBH wouldn't really want a huge loan hanging over my head)

Hiya. May I suggest you look at this link and apply:

    http://www.insulationgrants.info/cavity-wall-insulation/

I had cavity wall and loft insulation for free last year and I am employed, single and not receiving benefits, no dependents and under pension age. My house is now toasty warm! I've never had anything for free before and was very pleased.

The link says it covers all the UK. Hope it works for you!

    Fantastic, thanks for that Kara:T

You don't have to have children to get working tax credits!

I don't see what tuition fees and insulation has to do with being single. That's due to personal finances, being in a couple may make no difference

Why can't you get tuition fees paid for (for what???) due to being single?

You have to be on a really really low salary to get any working tax credits. Something like £12k and you'll get pence for that. Simple fact of life, if you're single, child free and you're working full time you basically get the benefit of 25% off your council tax and that's it.

Edited: hadn't read the rest yet, wasn't far off - £13k.

Ok...I've spotted a flaw here. Shouldn't there be a 'Significant Others' board? What about the visibly single people who are actually having an affair with someone who's married with kids? Or do those people just stay here for 80% of the time but do a 'raid' on the Mums/Dads/Grandparents area for the odd dirty weekend?

    All very confusing.
