Poor speeds from talktalk

My OAP father's internet provider is talktalk and has been for years.
TBH they have been fine and he has been very happy with the service.
Now however his broadband connections which should be around 8mb are down to 0.2
I know nothing about these things but tried a different router, different phone socket, connecting using ethernet cable and also wirelessly.
The results were consisitantly poor.
Talktalk want £50 to come out and investigate the problem.
Is there anything else I should try before he has to spend so much.
Thanks

if he's outside his minimum term of contract call and cancel, they'll want to know why and they may just waive the fee...0

1) do a quiet line test - dial 17070. If you have any noise then maybe a line fault
2) test at test socket and maybe change filters , see this post for details

3) register on talk talk forums rather than trying to deal with support on the phone

Tried changing the filter for a known good one?
Filters do go bad, and the ISP-provided ones are the cheapest rubbish available. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Could also be congestion/oversubscription on the local TalkTalk exchange kit (if he's on LLU) -couple of years ago my S-I-L's connection had slowed right down - when he got thru to TT Cancellations they put him on to 2nd tier tech support who admitted that his line had been "banded" (restricted bandwidth) - within 5 minutes his synch speed had risen from ~0.8Mb to 5.5Mb!!!!0

He may just need to update some of the programs on his computer, go to http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/ and download their tool to search and then update programs that windows miss, best of all it's free and well worth doing0

Sorry what contact details below? I tried to join the users forum to address the problem but was not allowed to. I was told I was a TT business customer, even though I am a domestic user who was previously with all incarnations of company ownership of this account which I've had for a decade going back though talktalk, opal, pipex, tiscali, freedom2surf.0
