Tony Benn slams BBC on air for "capitulating to Israeli pressure"

The political landscape has changed since the Arab spring. They aren't as isolated as they were, especially with the Muslim Brotherhood being dominant in Egyptian politics. Israel may almost surround Gaza, but Israel is surrounded by pro-Arab, Pro Muslim countries. China is also becoming a major economic power broker, gone are the days when the US could boss everyone around.
A quick read of history of post WW2 shows that Israel has always been surrounded by pro-Arab, Pro-Muslim countries.
History also shows that they have tried to wipe Israel from the face of the Earth.
Unless a compromise is reached they will probably succeeed; given that Israel has nuclear weapons one could reasonably assume that with the demise of Israel will be cairo, tehran, amman, baghdad, damascus ....
Probably not a price worth paying.0 -
Situation needs a halt to violence from both sides, israel to cease building on disputed territory, an end the blockade of gaza, and both sides recognises each others sovereignity. Trouble is, the level of fear and hatred in the region.
Neither side trusts one-another. Living next door to a neighbour you detest and distrust, it can be difficult to maintain the calm.0 -
And both sides have felt they were better off playing for time, rather than conceding anything or settling anything.
Israel figured it would change the game by building settlements on the West Bank, and in the meantime, maybe the Palestinians would get fed up and settle somewhere else or die out. Not working, they're breeding like rabbits in spite of everything,
And the Arabs figured that American support for Israel couldn't last for ever. Sooner or later, they would get the chance to invade Israel with the US unable to respond, for some reason, so they only had to hang on and wait for their chance.
Well Obama doesn't like Netanyahu and doesn't have re-election problems now. Still, he's not bending in public, but we don't know who he's leaning on in private."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0 -
Why does Israel keep expanding by building new settlements?
Is it worth the grief or is it all part of a plan?0 -

mutual distrust is indeed difficult to handle
however if one side has a stated policy of total annihilation of the other it does make negotiating a little more difficult.0 -

isn't that the west bank and not gaza?
i believe the history is that during the 1967 war (when the arabs attacked Israel) Israel won that land in the war. Some people believe that as such, it is legitimatelty Israeli land. I also think some religious types believe the whole of that area is Israel and they have a god given right to the area.
You should understand that whilst muslims claim Jerusalem is their holy city, it is much more prevalent in the jewish faith as the holy city. most jews pray facing jerusalem. most muslims pray facing mecca. jerusalem is hardly mentioned in the koran, whereas it is mentioned over 600 times in the torah.
also the muslim's built the "dome of the rock" mosque directly on the most holy site in judaism - the site of the temple.
i have no idea who is wrong or right, but these are some facts to assist.0 -

Its all part of the plan to drive Palestinians out of the West Bank. They call it facts on the ground.The_White_Horse wrote: »i have no idea who is wrong or right, but these are some facts to assist.
We know all about your "facts" and they are anything but.0 -

Its not that simple. The point is that there are different elements on both sides, each with different aims. Hamas has said that it will accept indefinitely Israel. However, there are elements on both sides that want to wipe each other out for example some parties in Israel want to effect mass transfer of the Palestinians, others want to quell any Palestinian resistance, however the boundaries of each aim has not been completed yet. In effect, many different wars are being fought.
Talking of trust and negotiation, the Palestinians tried negotiation, it was called the Oslo peace accord, and during the Oslo years, settlement doubled in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
So much for negotiation eh0 -
But you have to - or adopt their methods which makes you no better then them. There is no other option.
It does make you better than them if you are fighting for democracy and freedom and they are fighting for feudal dictatorship, the subjugation of women etc. We were no better then the Nazis because we had to use some of the same tactics such as saturation bombing ? Appeasement didn't work with the Nazis and it wouldn't work here, but some people never learn the lessons of history.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

Ah that proves it. Eh hold on a mo....
GH: Tony Benn's a champagne socialist as he comes from the landed gentry
LN: But he doesnt come from the landed gentry.
GH: He is a champagne socialist so he must have a large pot of money. And as he has a large pot of money he's a champagne socialist.
As I understand it he has a large estate and a lot of money. He purports to be a socialist, and is therefore what I call a champagne socialist. Landed gentry are those who can live comfortably off the land that they own. I don't know if that's true of him or not, but I wouldn't be surprised. More important that any of that is the hypocrisy of rich people who purport to be socialists. They expecting middle earners and the comfortably off but by no means wealthy to make sacrifices for the benefit of the "vulnerable", whilst they typically cream off all they can get and arrange their tax affairs in order to contribute the minimum (I don't know if Benn does that with tax or not, but he would not be unusual if he did),No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.
