the BBC could barely me more pro-Palestinian if it tried.
Oh it could. It would be a whole lot more pro-Palestinian if it didn't have the Jewish lobby breathing down its neck. As it is, the newsroom walks on eggshells, knowing that every word is monitored and counted, and being excruciatingly careful not to say anything that could be objected to. Or somebody will scream Anti-Semitism.

They've mentioned the 3 Israeli dead every 5 minutes since Thursday, usually without mentioning that it's still the same three, not a further three - i.e. not a single Israeli killed or injured since Thursday morning, though the BBC hasn't made that point.

Jeremy Bowen stepped out of line at the start by suggesting that there was electioneering involved. The Beeb quickly got some people to disagree, and since then Bowen has hardly been seen at all.
"It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis

and if you want to know why more Israeli's aren't being killed, watch this:

It is called the Iron Dome. It protects Israeli Citizens. The Govt of Israel likes to protect its people rather than use them as human shields. Funny that.

Agree that only benefiting a few is not a long term solution. Britain used that policy during much of its colonial period. You need the majority involved.

That list of people with vested interest should also include Israel and their supporters in the USA. At the moment the only situation they seem willing to accept is total victory with no acknowledgement that the Palestinians do have a valid case.

When assessing situations I like to check my own prejudices by asking whether my views would be different if through a different history the positions of the protagonists were reversed. eg armed Arab settlement over an historically recent and short period had led to the disappearance of a 1000 year Jewish dominated region with its inhabitants rendered stateless and dispersed to refugee camps. I suspect many of the currently pro Israel groups would be praising the brave freedom fighters struggling to regain their homeland.

yes the reverse is a good test but what meassage does it give?

just taking the period since the WW2 has seem millions and millions of people displaced.
the vast majority have (reluctantly or otherwise ) accepted the situation and created a new life for themsleves.

so what would you do about

    -germans expelled from Czech
    -germans expelled for poland
-poles expelled from USSR (now Ukraine)
    -muslins expelled for India
    -hindu expelled from Pakistan
-the religious 'cleansing ' of the whole of the middle east (i.e what was a very diverse middle east population of many religions) is now about 99.9% muslim
-the situation in all the former Yugoslavia... huge movements of people
    -chinese in Tibet
-Stalin forceably moved millions of people
-the russians that now live in the Baltic states

All these aren't direct comparisons but it raises the issue of how you resolve these issues.

The vast majority of Gaza population were not born in the Israeli territory so can only claim 'right' by reason that their parents (or grandparents) were born there.
The majority of the Israeli population were actually born there.

    So what's the solution?
Kick out the native born? To where?
    A united state?
A arab state in the southbank ?
Make gaza a part of Egypt?

The point about my (partial) long list of displaced peoples is that they don't live in refugee camps, they gave created a new life.
Why hasn't that happened in the middle east?

Sadly I can't see any real progress until all the people with vested interests (Syria, Jordon, Saudi, Iran etc plus all the terrorist groups) actually want a solution.

I think that they do all want a solution - and if Israel didn't have nuclear weapons then they would get that solution.

I can't see any real prospect of the Israel issue being resolved in my lifetime. I just hope that the Iranians never get their own nuclear arsenal, or a few rockets being fired from Gaza will be the least of all of our worries.

because Hamas is a terrorist organisation and is NOW the voted in Govt.

I'm sure if the IRA were elected into power, the UK Govt would have gone to town on them.

The last time I looked the IRA did get voted into government.

Israel created the circumstances in which a terrorist organisation like Hamas got voted into power, then they decleared war by killing the Hamas military leader. What did they expect? It all looks staged to me.

This bears one similarity to Ireland.

    Demographics

The catholic population of N.I is now a majority.

The population of Palestinians is growing at a pretty staggering rate.

It was mentioned as part of the news in regard to casualties in Gazza ...
Half the population of Gazza are children ..
Israel is going to have to make a decision soon or they may not get the chance .Maybe Palestinians know they have time on there side.

A minority group always has to change the way it conducts negotiations.

Lets just correct you here. Tony Benn wasnt a scion of the landed aristocracy. His father was a labour politician who was given a peerage by Churchill during the wartime coalition government.. If there had been life peeerages at the time I guess he would have got one of those.

    I understand that he's got a big pile somewhere -- he's a champagne socialist.
No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

If Israel really wants a peaceful future perhaps they would be better advised to do all they can to improve the life of the people in Gaza and the West Bank. A stable wealthy middle class in those areas would surely do far more for peace than any crushing defeat and further impoverishment of the population.

You can't conciliate with people whose elected leadership's avowed aim is your total destruction. Pie in the sky.

Ah that proves it. Eh hold on a mo....

GH: Tony Benn's a champagne socialist as he comes from the landed gentry

LN: But he doesnt come from the landed gentry.

GH: He is a champagne socialist so he must have a large pot of money. And as he has a large pot of money he's a champagne socialist.
