  • There is no problem whatsoever getting an Oyster Card sent to an address outside London. I have an Oyster Card, it was stolen and the kind people at Oyster posted one to the Manchester area for me. Also try closing the gaps when you enter your postcode. Sometimes that is all they mean by a valid postcode, etc. i.e. no spaces. Hope this helps you all.

Oyster card is brilliant - speaking as an occasional visitor to London.

    - Fares cheaper than cash,

    - no need to mess around with change,

    - can decide where you're going after starting the journey

    - ... and you don't need to decide at the start of the day whether it's worth getting a one-day travel card, as Oyster stops charging at 50p less than the travel card would have cost anyway. (As you can see, we sometimes have a fairly unstructured sort of day out in London, after visiting elderly aunt: "Well, the train home leaves King's X at 8pm, we'll leave aunty's after breakfast, head into central London and then decide what to do")

    If it's free, even better!

Having visited the capital recently, think the underground fares are expensive, so saving 50p with an oyster card is better than nothing i suppose.

    What's the deal?

If you ever travel around London using public transport, an Oyster card is a must. Single tube journeys costing £4 cost £1.50 with Oyster, and bus single bus journeys are £1 with the card instead of (an outrageous) £2 without.

    How do I get one?

Click through to the Free Oyster Card Promotion and fill in the form for your free Oyster. Do it soon, because the offer is limited to 100,000 free cards.

    Anything else I should know?

The offer is only open to new customers, one card per person/application.

    Thanks Martin,

Link worked for me and card is in the post, tho loved the create an online account that came up with the successful application page as you need the card number to register it.

Should save me a small bundle when i travel up there.
  • I got the invalid postcode message but it worked when i typed the postcode in capitals with no spaces.

I don't know how relevant this would be to most of you, but I am a member of the Lewisham library, and my library card is ALSO an Oyster card. I didn't have to pay anything for it, it's got my photo and everything, and I'm now carrying one less card in my wallet.

It might be a good idea to check with your local library to see if they have any such thing available.

I joined Lewisham library when I first moved back to London.. nothing said about the Oyster card bit! Is this very recent... I joined 5 months ago. I'm going to sign up to the Peckham Library... can I do it there... I suppose it's too late now as I have got a normal oyster card.

Wiggynut, don't you have to live in the right London borough to join a library? Peckham is in the LB of Southwark, Lewisham in the LB of Lewisham. For what it's worth, I've got a Southwark borough library card (Peckham's my local) and it doesn't have any Oystercard functionality.
