  • Being using my compost bin now for about a month! I love it! my children 5, 3 love having a nosey in it when emptying the kitchen caddy! There are loads of slugs moved in and a huge spider that was in the bin when I got it (left it in to eat some of the flies hehe)

going to start adding newspaper to the caddy :T top tip! Also shredded paper my green bin is going to be empty after loo rolls and kitchen rolls and paper go lol:D

I've not been putting in orange peel as I heard not too but should I?

yeah another thread for me to get hooked on!!

    Welcome!

The problem with oranges and lemons are that they are very acidic which unbalance the makeup of the compost but the odd one every now and then really shouldn't make much difference. Depends whether you are an excessive orange muncher or not?! :D

  • Is it worth me composting. Our local authority will give us a composting bin for £10 and deliver it! I'd like to do it but will probably only be in our rental flat for a year.

Ours is about 70% full we have had it about 4 months now. Its surprising how much waste you can accumulate, like egg shells, cardboard (not the thick stuff), weeds, lawn cuttings, leaves etc from our small garden

Will ash from a log burner be okay, I seem to recall ash is very fertile

    Hi all,

Many years ago, when all our fires (remember fires?) were woodburning we used to put the (cold) ashes on our rhubarb patch and we always had wonderful rhubarb. So it would appear that it could go into the composter...just make sure that it is cold as OH once set fire to a nice shrub by 'mulching' it with ash which wasn't quite cold!

Enjoy the thread, not as good at you lot at the composting, will keep trying

hmmm, you won't get much use out of it and the trouble is, will the next tenants use it? You could get it anyway and take it with you when you move.....

No, rather confusingly SHE answers to the name Oscar, (people at the cat rescue place told us she was a boy and foolishly we believed them)

We like to call her Oscarina.
