oooh goody - lots of new people making lots more compost! :j

I think we need to start asking Just-saving to start sending us some chicken poo to start our composters going again :rotfl:

I put the contents of my vac in the bin too, apparantly as long as it has some wool content it's fine.

All those new to it shouldn't worry too much. As long as the right things are going in, you will soon learn after you have used your first batch how to make it a success.

I completely agree with absfabs - I had some lumpy bits when I used mine for the first time but I just figured it would all rot down in the end.

With regards to the milky teabag, I read somewhere that when you rinse your milk bottles out you should put the water on the flower beds as it is a mild fertiliser.

The council website has a list of 'green' and 'brown' things you can out in there, I'm going to pin it on my wall in the utility so I remember :j

  • I ordered my Compost Bin (£10), Base (£6) with a Free Kitchen Caddy from Birmingham City Council on 04/05 and it was delivered this morning - the website said that it could take up to 28 days but it only took 7 days :T

Hiya, I got my free compost bin last week (actually we got 2) & I see we need to mix the stuff up in it as we straight away put a load of grass in there :o

Thanks for the tips on this thread & the links - very useful :D

Oh oh, I went to sort out my compost today, added the contents of the shredder and had a good rake about to mix the stuff up. I found some black mush as described somewhere above :o

Looks like I need some more brown stuffs in there :)

    Hiya, Me again!

Have never heard about composting cooking oil.

Can't see it would do the composting process much good, as it seems to be quite the opposite in consistency than all the other stuff we put in. Surely it would clump it all together and suffocate any beneficial microbes?

Was intrigued by the question, though, especially as catz had found someone advocating it, so this is what I found googling:

    http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:2oEP1kSsw8MJ:www.compostthis.co.uk/item/cooking-oil+compost%2Boil&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=10&gl=uk

sorry, don't know how to post link any neater than this:p
