I know a few teachers, sometimes they get absolutely loads of chocs, lots of bunches of flowers, and lots and lots of teacher, best teacher, i love my teacher knicknacks mugs, picture frames etc etc, in fact one of the said teacher gave some of these nicknacks to me to give to the charity to sell, some were still in boxes. My primary school some of the parents went so overboard with the extra large flower creations, you felt wrong if you didnt do something. With all the boxes of chocs i cant imagine that homemade creations would get a look in and get binned. I stopped all the buying before primary school finished and wished id stopped earlier. Why not do some footprint notecards of your childs feet if they are young enough with a big thank you teacher on it, doesnt cost anything, your child will feel good and they can chuck after xmas without too much guilt.

I used to live nextdoor to someone was baked and her cakes were popular at school, often got asked to bake some cakes for Christmas parties and such. If they had only seen the filth of her house. I saw a workman come out of her house one day and vomit. I offered him some water and he said the smell in her kitchen was the worst he had ever come across.

  • What an interesting topic! I much preferred a 'thank you' than any gift or card from a child. Somehow it always meant much more than a material reward.

I live next door to one teacher and am friends with another... the chocolates are often sat and sat... unless they are expensive ;) - purely because they get so many! My neighbour however keeps every single card the kids make or write her on a coffee table and they will be there well into the new year and some of them get saved to be put up again next year... she loathes mugs, she doesn't want home bake as she's a fussy eater and always has been... but that hand made card with a genuine thanks... she LOVES those... :) (Although I'm sure if you REALLY wanted to put something cheap but funny and welcome in the card then stick a scratch card in with a note "We'd sure miss you, but maybe it can be a VERY merry Christmas for you ;)" or something like that :) £1 spent isn't all that much and I'm sure they'd understand the sentiment :)

Yes, sorry if you find it offensive, but I don't eat them and nor do most others that I know. I would never tell the children or the parents that, but I wouldn't eat food baked by strangers in the street and essentially that is what most of the parents are-strangers. I have no idea of their standard of cleanliness and wouldn't risk spending the whole of my holidays being poorly!
It's not meant to offend, it's about being honest and saving a few parents on here a bit of money.Like I said I would never tell the parents in my class not to bother but please try to look at it from our point of view. I've seen children play with their bits, pick their noses, their bums and in the case of the really little ones, other peoples noses and bums;), there is nothing to say they haven't been doing the same 2 minutes before making us those lovely homemade biscuits! If a family you didn't know offered you homemade goods to eat could you honestly say that you would feel entirely comfortable eating them?
I'm sure that you make your children wash their hands before cooking, just as I'm sure lots of others do, but I'm equally as sure that there would be some that don't. There's also the cats on the workshop debate and a whole host of other things to take in to consideration.
I'm with everyone else on here, a homemade card or picture would be really appreciated, I certainly don't expect any more than that.

Anyone else watching More4's come dine with me? Lady was just making some vegetarian jelly, took a spoonful of the melted liquid, then spat it back out into the jug... I hope she didn't then use that liquid to make the final jelly!! Just goes to show - you really can't judge someone's hygiene standards in the kitchen from how they look.

Im glad Ive read this and a little shocked by the response to say the least! I dont have kids of my own but my niece has just started school and I would be slightly offended if my niece and my mum went to all the effort of baking something, finding the money to buy the ingredients and then of course all the time invested in it to find it was thrown away! I couldnt imagine any parent being careless enough to cook in an unsafe environment or even bake something which could cause effect!!

If its for the fact that theres too much food then fair enough but to say its because of who has brought it in or the fact that you didnt control the kitchen it would made in really does shock me

You've lived a very sheltered life if you think this!
  • When mine were I in primary I never sent in home made stuff as I wouldn't expect the teachers to eat it if I'm honest. But then I'm a bit fussy myself and wouldn't eat anything I didn't know where it was made :-)

My kids use to give the teachers presents , it use to be a cheap plain white mug which they use to draw on, then inside was a sealed biscuit, a sachet of coffee,a sachet of hot choc and a tea bag, plus a t-spoon. Then put in a cello bag and tied with frilly stuff ..

The teachers always seemed to appreciate them and infact the reception teacher showed it to dd on her last day at primary, 7years later lol
  • My SIL who is a teacher loves the wine gifts.

Have to agree sadly... sorry but honestly some of the sights I've seen!

My kitchen isn't always the cleanest or tidiest and we have cats (who DO NOT go in the kitchen!! It's locked!) but if I am cooking for us or others it's always clean and hygienic - however I know many who are not as fastidious... sadly!
