Do teachers really throw away homebaked gifts?

You really can never tell what a child's home kitchen is like, how clean the hands are that make the goods or who dips their finger in, in passing, to try the mix before its baked.:rotfl: Most small (and not so small) children need prompting to wash their hands after a loo visit and its clearly not something that is instilled regularly at home in some cases.
Even chocolates aren't fail safe, we had a family give a tub of chocolates last Xmas and after opening and trying a few between us they tasted a bit off. Looking at the bottom of the box its BB date was December 2010.

Parents shouldn't feel that they have to give something but I love home made cards, drawings and bookmarks.

I'll reemphasise what others have said:
I personally do not want a gift. I'm just doing what I get paid for. But if someone was going to go to the bother of baking something I would rather they put the effort into making a nice home made card and writing me a thank you letter. I don't want nicknacks that won't fit into my decor. I don't want food (I'm *trying* to lose weight, yes I'll have some of Christmas 'off' but I'd rather not undo all my hard work). I don't want smellies, or candles, or mugs, or alcohol.

It was a colleague's birthday the other week, you should have seen the gifts she was receiving - it was vulgar. One parent even dropped off two boxes of unwrapped chocolates mid morning - she'd obviously taken her kid to school in the morning, spoken to other parents (or her daughter had spoken to her peers) thought **** we haven't bought anything for Miss' birthday everyone else has, and dashed off to the shops. Why two boxes? The message that was passed to my colleague was one was from her & her daughter; the other was from her friend & her son.

What I'm getting at is the whole buying teachers gifts is just going crazy in my opinion. As I said we're just doing our jobs at the end of the day. I can see the sentiment behind them, and can understand why it's nice to tell your children's teacher that you wish them a wonderful Christmas. But I think that sentiment can be expressed if a different way.

I have been surprised and a bit shocked by the responses too, but the honesty of the opinions is why I asked the question.

I'll keep the extra cake, certainly makes me view the giving of teacher gifts in a completely different light, not sure I'll bother in future.

    Thanks for the honesty everyone.

Honestly, teachers don't need gifts. Just a holiday!
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Didn't they get one last week or so? And every six weeks.

The teachers and teaching staff are not being rude or ungrateful. They just see the kids as the parents don't necessarily see them at home (not washing hands, picking nose/bum/ear) and its not great to then think about eating some homemade creation from them.

The hardwork and thought is appreciated though, just not necessary.

    Xx

    Yes, and they are needed.

  • my children took home made goods in regularly both in primary school and high school and the teachers ate them in front of them

in fact we knew it was time to send in more when the head would come to them in the dinner hall and ask what they had :rotfl:
  • I am very much a lurker rather than a poster but I just wanted to reassure you that provided your child is not the one who turns up in dirty school clothes with nits in their hair, everyone at my school loves home baked gifts, would definitely eat them and they are much appreciated!

I thought nits preferred clean hair...
  • My boyfriend is a primary teacher, and believe me - holidays are needed. When he comes home from school, which is about 5pm - he has to mark work. And at weekends, he has to plans lessons etc.

He actually works 8-7 weekdays and all of sunday. And he even sets up class in his lunch hour. Teachers work very hard. If they didnt have a break every 6 weeks, they couldnt do the job.
