I have nothing against children. However on a recent flight we were sat near a crying baby on one side and an an unruly child in front of us. We both came off with splitting headaches and called it the flight from hell. Surely there is a case for airlines to designate a section of the aircraft for adults only. Alternatively why not allocate seats from the front for passengers over 16 and start from the back for families with children under 16. Or visa versa with families at the front and adults at the rear. That way everyone should be happy. It would not be that difficult with modern technology. Has anyone any thoughts on this subject?

None that I have not shared before and on the basis that God created noise reducing headphones for flights, before I voted to have adult only sections I'd have sections for the following.
 1. Dustbin swallowers with a BMI in excess of 30.
 2. People with halitosis.
 3. People with personal hygeine issues.
 4. Boring people.
 5. People who cannot enjoy the free gratis drinks trolley without making an rrrse of it.
 6. Smokers with that unmistakable scent of a crack wh0res sofa (allegedly).
 7. People who don't realise that the armrest between me and them is MINE.
Personally I think airlines should have a seat cage next to the hand luggage cage and if a passenger cannot fit their butt into the cage without spilling over into their neighbors seat, then they should be forced to purchase a second seat as per current rules in place with many airlines, but rarely enforced.
If you can be strict about hand luggage, why not fatties?
And before someone says "it's not my fault I'm fat, I have a medical condition/I only have to look at food to get fat/I have a food addiction due to post traumatic stress/etc", rest assured that it's not a childs fault that they are a child either. The MSE Dictionary The MSE Dictionary

Hmm not sure it would work. What about people with well behaved non whinging older kids- why should they suffer the babies and toddlers as well. Or the person with a sound asleep baby- who then is woken by other peoples kids? Too many variables0

I am no way defending I am fat due to certain condition or anything but I am fat and I am Cabin Crew a pax only need to purchase a second seat once they cannot sit normally into one seat with an extension belt.0

Is that the enforced policy or the written policy? .... As far as I was aware the bare minimum requirement is that the passenger be able to fasten the seatbelt and put the armrest down.I am Cabin Crew a pax only need to purchase a second seat once they cannot sit normally into one seat with an extension belt.
United are very clear on the matter.
 https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/specialneeds/customersize/default.aspx
A customer is required to purchase an additional seat or upgrade if they do not meet one of the following criteria:
 1. The customer must be able to properly attach, buckle and wear the seat belt, with one extension if necessary, whenever the seatbelt sign is illuminated or as instructed by a crew member.
 2. The customer must be able to remain seated with the seat armrest(s) down for the entirety of the flight.
 3. The customer must not significantly encroach upon the adjacent seating space. The MSE Dictionary

Young children and babies cry on planes because the change in pressure hurts their ears and they are unable to control it.
But I think to all the times I have been pissed off on a flight, and its pretty much every time I fly and exclusively, it is another adult that pisses me off.
A cry is easy to ignore with the invent of some quite excellent Bose headphones - But a !!!!! behind you constantly knocking your seat, or a knob who thinks the rules on a plane don't apply to them - Is somewhat more difficult.0

i can not ignore crying babies on flights, probably because i am a mother, albeit children grown up. The noise goes right through me
i have been on many of long haul flights where babies have screamed contstantly. you need to sleep
i wish babies & children showed up on seat plans so you could pick & change seats accordingly0

Being a bloke and a father I cannot ignore a child in distress either, however as mentioned i can revert to technology and purchase decent over ear noise cancelling headphones. The MSE Dictionary The MSE Dictionary

We can only endorse the sentiment if having an adult only section on flights. I cannot understand why any families would object. I know you might get some irritable adult sitting next to you but having no kids around you would certainly reduce the chance of constant disturbance. Come on airlines bring it on0

I think it's more about unpreparedness or laziness on the part of the parents. My 3 year old has been on 37 flights, of which 12 were long haul, and my 1 year old has been on 11 (2 long hauls). Only twice has the older one cried, both times for less than 5 minutes, because his ears hurt on descent and he refused to drink the drink we'd provided or even eat the sweets we brought in case he wasn't thirsty.
To the topic in hand, don't like flying with other people? Charter a private jet. Same principle as don't like the bus? Take a taxi.
