MillicentBystander Thank you very much for that. It's extremely reassuring. I was about to pay 3 £25 per month and get a load of minutes texts etc which I would never use. The Virgin option seems much better if I'm more interested in data than minutes.

Just be aware that Virgin don't have micro sims nor nano sims. They seem to only be able to provide standard sims.

    Thanks, Jem16

This would be for an iPhone 4, so I may have a problem there...

Just cut a full sized sim down to a Mirco Sim, either by hand or the easy way with a Sim Cutter (a few £ on eBay).

Thanks, but I'm very nervous about the idea of doing that. I like things to be very plain and simple in case there are ever support issues.

  • I suppose the question you have to answer is is it worth paying £13/mth/£156/yr extra for extra peace of mind? Personally I've never cut a SIM as I haven't had to but I do know several people who have with no bad outcome.
  • I'm not sure that Virgin do officially allow tethering. This is from the legal stuff on their website - hard to find it as it's well buried.

"Unlimited mobile internet is subject to a fair use allowance of 1GB per month. If your usage exceeds this amount then we reserve the right to charge you for the excessive element of your usage at the daily rate for your tariff outlined in our Tariff Table. Unlimited use is within the UK and is for your personal, non-commercial use only. It doesn't include making internet phone or video calls, peer to peer file sharing, using your phone as a modem, or while you are abroad and any of these uses will be charged at the daily rate for your tariff outlined in our Tariff Table."

Rather than unlimited internet, that reads like 1GB per month with no tethering, making it a pretty poor value proposition.

£10 a month from giffgaff gives you 1GB and specifically allows tethering (or £12 a month gives truly unlimited internet, but no tethering).

They have apparently (and demonstrably in my son's case) been superseded. Unlimited web truly does now mean unlimited web and unlimited tethering as confirmed by the VM rep on the link I provided earlier. And 3 separate VM reps I spoke to on the phone. And indeed with a we chat I've just had with VM now.

edit: forgot to say, also confirmed by email on 4/10/2012. I'm nothing if not thorough :D

    Hello MBS,

Thanks for your email about our fair usage policies.

We appreciate you taking the time to write to us about this and we're happy to advise.

We'd like to take this opportunity to apologise for the delay in replying to your email, we've been experiencing a higher email volume than normal.

It's great to hear you're thinking of joining us!

The great news is that all our new Pay Monthly tariffs now come with truly unlimited tariffs.

There are no fair use policies and no limits. You can simply use as much as you like. So if it’s time to change your tariff, you could be getting more for your money on any of these tariffs. You can find out more at virginmobile.co.uk/paymonthly.

If you’d like to learn more about the fair usage policies connected with these tariffs, just go to virginmobile.co.uk/legalstuff.

Just so you know, you'll be able to tether, if the phone you're using has the capability.

However, we don't support this service, so unfortunately if you have any technical problems, you'd need to refer back to your user guide. We're sorry we wont be able to fully support you on this.

We hope this helps to answer your queries.
    Kind regards,

    Donna Arici

Is the truly unlimited, no fair usage policy change reflected at virginmobile.co.uk/legalstuff as they state? It desn't look clear to me.
