SIM only with tethering?

Looking for Smartphone SIM only contract (probably for iPhone ) which allows occasional tethering. As iPad already has O2 and partner uses 3 ideally would like to look at Orange/TMobile or Vodophone. Data usage will be small as mainly covered by iPad.

1. Do SIMs actually STOP you tethering in terms of locking out option in iPhone menus to make a wifi hots spot etc. (seems to on O2 iPad but not on partners iPad with Three 3G PAYG sim ).
2. Orange say cost of the tethering is £1 per day in T&C for SIM only. How do they know you are tethering and do they have to block this feature.
3. Any suggestions ? unclear as to Vodaphone status and tethering . VIrgin which seem to use Orange backbone seem to be good value and seem to allow tethering but customer service reputation is poor and not obviously clear.

Thanks

Don't waste money on a contract.

    Get:

1/ Ovivo sim for your tablet (0.5Gb free each month)

2/ Ovivo sim for your phone: 100 minutes, 100 texts and 200mb free each month

Or you could try to manage with one sim - I believe Ovivo allow tethering.

But you get more free data allowance if you have a separate tablet sim.

Never topup again! (unless you go over your free monthly allowance).

Why spend your hard earned cash on mobile contracts when you can get it all free?

Herongull has the right idea ( and I've just applied for an Ovivo sim), but if you want to be with Orange then some of their contracts permit tethering.

I'm on a sim only 12 month Orange Panther contract with 300 mins, unlimited texts and 500m/b data for £10.50 a month and tethering is specifically allowed for Panther contracts.

Ovivo run on the Vodafone Network, I have one of there Data Sims in my old iPad (it was a one off cost of £5 at the time, for 1Gb of free data a month).

In my new iPad I have a PAYG T-Mobile iPhone Sim

    http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/sim-only/#simloaded

It cost £10 for the Top-Up (so you don't have to top-up again if its in an iPad) because you get 12 months Free Internet. You have to first set it up in an iPhone 4/S and then put it in your iPad, but it works fine for me and on Friday I was sat outsite a cinema thought it was working quite well so did a Speed Test and it was running at around 7Mb/s which is faster than my home broadband...

ALL Virgin SIM only deals allow tethering as standard, including the truly unlimited data ones. They piggy back on T-Mobile/EE. They are great value and only 30 day rolling so no silly commitment. Never had a problem with CS/billing etc personally.

If you don't need many mins this one is pretty unbeatable taking into account the tethering

    Mobile SIM Only £7
    SIM card cost FREE
    Your tariff gives you:
    150 minutes
    Unlimited texts
    500MB Mobile Web

PS If you are using IOS 5 or above take care with Ovivo at the moment
Do you support Tethering? Close the answer
    Yes Ovivo Mobile supports Tethering.

However, customers who use devices that were purchased from other networks, may find that tethering restrictions may still be enforced on that handset even though it is unlocked. At present, we are investigating an ongoing issue with iPhone devices running iOS v5 and higher, but generally Android is fine. Please check with the retailer who sold you the handset if in doubt.

Furthermore, although we support Tethering, we recommend our customers to purchase a Tablet/Mobile Broadband SIM card from us as the free monthly allowance is bigger. Tethering can lead to high data consumption, it may make sense being on our Tablet price plan instead for Mobile Broadband purposes.

This sounds extremely interesting. I was about to go with 3 to get unlimited tethering.

But I've been poking around on the Virgin site and can't find anything about tethering at all.

Maybe my eyesight is failing! But please could someone give me a link or tell me where to look.

    Thanks

Giffgaff's £10 goodybag now allows tethering (1GB, 250minuts, unlimited texts, unlimited giffgaff to giffgaff calls).

Thanks, Fifer, but I want more data than that. At the moment I have separate phone and dongle accounts and want to combine everything in one. I think 1gb might be a bit tight.

Virgin unlimited includes tethering, EE only provide a data connection to Virgin Media servers, the internet flows through Virgin Media who can offer data cheaper than EE set up. Which is weird considering France Telcom own 50% EE and have a massive European backhaul network & buying power.

ie...50% EE pounds profit converted to Euros pays France Telecoms 30 BILLION pound debt off.

Calls/texts on Virgin go through EE, data through Virgin Media.

Virgin Media Business provide alot of backhaul data to EE base stations, frankly Virgin UK still has EE's 50% France & Germany ownership by the balls LOL
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)

It's like they actually don't want the whole world to know about it for fear of getting jumped on by the data abusers :p But when i was looking for a SIM for my son who is currently renting hence no phone line it eventually led me to Virgin and prompted me to register on their help forums and get the answer direct from the horse's mouth (I'm AcerFan and note I had to prompt the CS person for an answer).

Suffice to say my son has been tethering like crazy on his U/L data SIM package and on his online account no extra charges at all. HTH.

his SIM deal costs £17/mth for

    1200 mins
    u/l texts
    truly u/l data
    tethering allowed

But if you don't want that many mins you can get the same deal but with 150 mins for a crazy £12/mth or one with 250 mins for £15/mth. All 30 days rolling as well.
