...what's more, it's reduced to a 14 day trial and, having just signed up again, it's now saying 25 free downloads not 50 <grrr>

You'll need to clear your cookies first, and ensure you go through a referral link which offers the 100 free tracks, but it's perfectly possible to get them again.

I use the link on this page, which has worked every time for me.

    BE VERY CAREFUL!

I signed up for the free trial and went around downloading until I got a warning. However, probably by some error, no warning was given until I had downloaded too many tracks.

They then charged me £8.99 for a subscription and refuse to refund this.

I am a complete novice here.

I want to download some music onto a CD for the car.

I went onto the website for the 50 free downloads but it says you must have mp3 on your computer.

I don't have this, does that mean I cannot download the music for my CD?

If that is the case does anyone know where else I can try.

They charged me 8.99 too pezza88, and am awaiting a response for my request for a refund. According to my account on the web, I still have 11 downloads remaining.

I just wanted to let people know my current, upsetting experience with eMusic. I signed up after it being mentioned in the freebies section of the moneysaving email. Put my details in, checked terms and conditions and signed up. After a browse I couldn't find anything I particularly wanted at that moment, that was approx. three weeks ago, I think, (I really doubt it has been even a month). This morning I checked my bank account to see if my passport renewal check had come out and found that eMusic had taken out £86.30! This has made me overdraw by about £20 and the passport check still needs to come out (£66). Suffice to say I am very, very upset about this and contacted eMusic straightaway but they don't have any phone numbers I can find and are only contactable via email, which I did and received an automated reply saying they'll be in touch at some point. Even if I had expired my free trial a monthly membership is £8.99 and I haven't even downloaded a single thing from them. I don't understand how this amount has been reached and I don't know how long they are going to take to get back in touch with me. I am unemployed due to sickness and only get one benefit payment every fortnight so I need to get this sorted before my bank charges me for going over the (£50) overdraft, which I don't even think I can do, so that is more fines and penalties from the passport office for a bouncing check and from the bank for overdrawing. I am confused, upset and angry and pray that eMusic are sympathetic and prompt. Obviously if they sort everything out that I will let Moneysavers know but so far I have just been left worrying and waiting for an email that may not even arrive today.

To the people who have been charged unlawfully, may I suggest posting this in the Warnings & Rip-Off MoneySaving Board &/or The (Consumer) Vent Board as well.

Violet, if your bank fines you, this may be of some help to recover the money: 'Bank taking your Benefit? Quote this'. G

    I've been charged too

I added one extra track accidentally, and got no warning whatsoever. Technically, I haven't downloaded it, the download manager was busy so I cancelled it before it ever arrived. So they have charged me for something I haven't received. However, I now have to go through the rigmarole of claiming my money back.

I used Switch, anyone know if I'm covered by any protection scheme?

Big thumbs down on this one, they are obviously set up to charge people as much as possible without suitable forewarning.
    Thanks in advance,

Violet, when you apply for a free trial, you're offered a year's subscription at 20% discount, which comes to £86.30. I think what has happened is you clicked on the link accepting this.

It's a bit naughty really since the year's suibsciption link is a nice round button, but the monthly subscription link below it is just a plain old hyperlink (much less interesting). Easy to click on the nice round button without reading the details if you're in a hurry to download stuff. I wonder how many others have been caught out.

Sorry this doesn't help get a refund but at least it explains where the amount came from.

Anyone with a Cahoot a/c intending to go for a free trial than cancelling should use their webcard facility (if you don't know what this is, seach for webcard on this site).

I've done this twice. The second time I set the limit at £1 after reading this thread.

Thanks for all posts on this thread - I hope you get your problems sorted.

P.S. for lovers of real music - just search for The Kinks.
