  • Most of the tracks on emusic are from independent labels ie not sony, emi, warners etc. If you like anything current that would never trouble the singles charts, though possibly the album charts, then this site could be for you. Anybody who likes indie, punk, rock, anything guitar based really, will find lots of early releases from current artists before they were signed to a major label and lots of live tracks. I've used the site for two free trials (used 2 different email addresses which fooled the system though this was some time ago and may no longer work) and downloaded stuff from Johnny Cash, Pavement, Aretha Franklin, Pixies. Unfortunately there is a restriction on downloading music by many UK artists :(
    Best Freebies:

if it is music you love, the sound of melodies or new vibes, you could always try music licensed under creative commons there are a number of links http://www.artistserver.com/charts.cfm is just one

This music is generally free to play and some to copy as you see fit. It is all part of the open and free community out there, like Ubuntu
All my software is completely free, even the operating system. Look at Linux :)

It may be free, but it is rubbish.

I think that's a little harsh - while tastes vary I got some great albums last time I used this offer and saved at least £25 as i would have bought most of these on cd otherwise - Seth Lakeman, Ali Farka Toure with Ry Cooder (amazing album!), Belle & Sebastian, Ladysmith Black Mabazo, Shooglenifty, etc

Okay, if your taste in music is limited to the very mainstream (bland) top 40 chart stuff then you may be dissapointed but if you enjoy indie, folk, jazz or world music you are likely to find some good stuff.....

The trick with eMusic is to combine it with a site like Last.fm

This is an internet radio site which invites you to load your favourite bands, then plays music by lesser known bands which fans have suggested is similar. Invariably these bands, just as good if not better but lacking the huge marketing support required to reach today's mainstream, will be available on eMusic. I easily fill my allocation each month. Recommendations would be:

    Elbow
    Ben Christophers
    Blackfield
    iLiKETRAiNS
    Marillion
    Porcupine Tree

Only 25 downloads and it should also be pointed out that this is the bargain basement of music selection.

I have a pretty wide listening range covering loads of music but after 40 minutes looking cant find a single thing worthy of my first download. Did the normal thing of entering in about 12 different songs and 6 different mainstream artists in the search feature and got no hits for a single one. It may be free, but it is rubbish.

Totally agree. Went through the palava of signing up to realise that unless you like Country and Western or a heavy dose of the Blues then you will be sorely disappointed.

Going to https://www.zvue.com and clicking on music displays an ad for emusic, clicking it gives an offer of 100 tracks.

    http://www.zvue.com/html/music.php

Can't see any strings attached to the offer, seems open to anyone.
  • Cheers Galstonian, I have added a note in about that in the main post.

Also, I have edited the link for the original 30 day trial, so it should definitely now offer 35 mp3s. The previous link was showing 35 for us, but the reports of 25 obviously show that wasn't universal. The new link will hopefully sort this out.
