go to the entitled to website and answer the questions on there
it'll tell you what benfits you should be able to get.
call the WFTC/CTC people and tell them that your circumstances have changed they should be able to recalculate your claim (I know because they said we earned too much but I have been out of work since April and told them as much and now I get CTC)
yes it does beggar belief that you can work 'all your life and get nothing' when the Daily Mail is quick to tell everyone that there are people who have never worked a day in their life/not lived here and made any contribution to the economy of the UK/<insert another blood pressure raising thing here> and yet they seem to [STRIKE]'earn'[/STRIKE] receive in benefits in a week more than we can take home in a month when we both work.
I am a bit confused that your hubbie can't get Contributions Based JSA f you say he has worked all his life. Job Centre take into account two year's NI contributions so it will be 2010/11 and 2011/12. He can ask for a breakdown of his annual NI contributions from HMRC. I have just seen that he was self employed perhaps that could have something to do with it...
Go to local Council get Housing benefit form, and ask about Support for Mortgage Interest payment.
I don't have anything else to !!! aside from register on REED.co.uk and Jobsite. Could he take a temp job to tide you over til he gets somethign more permanent - some of the supermarkets are still recruiting for Xmas as are Royal Mail...
have a look on Old Style Board to see where you can cut down your groceries bill
Post an SOA on DFW board to see if they can help you cut your outgoings til you're back on your feet.
    Good Luck.

Off topic, but, I don't see that it caused "outrage accross Britain" I wasn't outraged, I was thankful that we live in a country where the judiciary are independent of the government, and no-one is above the law, not the government, not anyone.

Agreed, but when the press point out he gets £50,000 in benefits a year and you find yourself not entitled to anything when you need it, it's bound to upset you.

Slightly confused Nannytone are you talking about the op or the people from the newspaper link ?

Op not much I can add but wish you luck and hopefully you will get some help. I have fallen on bad times due to illness and loss of job and I have found every stage of the benefits process confusing and difficult with different people saying different things and noone who works in DWP seeming to know what is going on. In the last month I have over 10 pounds worth of calls to the 0845 number and still no further forward.
Play nice  Just because I am paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get me.:j

We applied for Child/Working Tax Credit and were told we had earned to much.
Tax credits will ask for your income last year and they'll base the initial award on that - so if that was over about £26k they would have given you a zero award.

BUT if your income is going to be a lot less this year you can phone them and give them as estimate, and they'll base your award on that (accounting for the £2500 disregard for income drops).

Be aware though, that if you earn more than the estimate you'll have an overpayment. It's a bit of a crystal ball job as you don't know whether your partner will get a job, but if you need the money now then give them an estimate based on him not getting a job, and if he does get one, you will need to put money aside when he's earning in case there's an overpayment. Keep track of your entitlement on the entitledto calculator.

There may be a few people out there that are happy to wallow on benefits, but the op Husband doesn't sound like he is one, they are looking for help for just now. Unfortunately there seems to be a few out there either using these boards or other means to defraud the system and everyone else seems to be suffering.

I too wish I had a choice, I would choose not to have been unfairly dismissed due to illness after 20 years service or have been able to afford to take it tribunal. Mostly I would choose not to be ill. :(Unfortunately we got to live with what we got and try and make the best of it.

[possibly i am just venting. but when proplr hsve no opportunity to better thenselves abd are looking at loding the better part of their income .... its really hard to feek sorry for this that have a degree of choice.

personally i know people that have had children, knowimg that their benefits will increase to sustain their choice,

peiole like me have no choice. we are dependant on the system. uet we are the easy target and no matter how many incntives are dangled before us .... we cant takr adbantage of them, and so we become thr under class, and akk vecause we have no choice/B]

It is hard - but there ARE jobs, just keep looking. Having been in a similar position recently I can honestly say the motivation for seeking work is higher than ever (due to no help).

Is it right? Personal opinion is no, but I can't change what is there and the situation.

Job search, network, linked it, do anything. I hope it works out for your family and wish you well.

I would be upset too..They are quick to say you haven't paid enough contributions for the previous year to get benefits, but people come from other country's who have paid nothing in and get everything. I would be P***ed off at that too.

    Hope he finds something soon.
