There are at least two private schools in the vicinity where boys have to wear shorts until they start secondary education. Reading previous posts, this seems to be quite common here in Scotland. A hardy race!

Today is now the third time in a fortnight that I have seen a boy at our local primary school wearing shorts.

Surely it is too cold for a child to be wearing shorts in this weather?

I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts as to why someone might do this.

The school that my daughter goes too has a very strict uniform policy. Girls may only wear skirt or pinafore all year round and boys must wear shorts, they are only allowed to wear trousers in year 6. If it is snowing then they may take jogging bottoms to put on for play time.

My son is due to start (hopefully) next sept and i will just make sure i get him knee length shorts and big thick wooly knee socks.
I dont think he will freeeze to death because he has to wear shorts.

My daughter wears cullottes (girly equivalent of shorts!) and refuses to wear tights underneath, think she'll give in when it gets colder still, but for now she says she's warm enough. And schools are always so overheated - she usually comes out without her jumper on either!

Oh and one of my friends was saying how disgraceful it is that they must wear skirts/ shorts and that its against the childs human rights and she would refuse and send her daughter in trousers blah blah blah.
But the children at my dd's school always look neat and tidy and presentable and the school has an outstanding ofstead report and has done for a long time. The school that my friends dd goes to is failing, only got a satisfactory ofstead report and all the children attend in what ever they like to wear, i have even seen girls going into the yard in neon stripey tights and fluffy ugg type boots!
  • My daughter today, was sitting in her pushchair in a t shirt, refusing to wear her coat, scarf or mittens.

Some parents do seem to be a bit over-zealous worrying about their children getting cold - some of the children at school look like Nanuk of the North! One of the children in DD's gymnastics club tonight had a vest and leggings on under her leotard (not a good look), but they don't need bundling up when they're running around exercising. DD and DS are well used to wearing shorts, etc... when they're playing rugby, football, netball, etc... even in the most shocking weather. Makes the hot bath when they get home all the more enjoyable!!

My youngest daughter wore ankle socks for most of her time at primary school. Not that she didnt have long socks but she didnt like them. If i hadnt put my foot down in the snow and the ice she would have worn them instead of long socks or tights throughout the worst of the weather.

At the end of the day i dont mind my children forming some sort of stand/independence in their choice of clothing but i knew when to make a stand. After all, I'm the adult and she was the child.

My eldest son hated his coat too but by the time he'd took a dislike to it he was at high school and old enough to learn by his mistakes.

I think probably an ASD! either that or he is trying to 'toughen himself up'! or doesnt feel the cold - I went down the school Tues to pick up the grandkids nicely wrapped up in jacket and scarf - and this girl walked ahead of me wearing Jeans and a Strappy Top!

Well I have had my suspicions. Right from very young he refused to wear anything with buttons (top/shirt wise) and only 'tolerated' a poloshirt for school. And when they introduced fleece tops as uniform as an alternative to a jumper he got one but refused to take it off, even on the hottest day of summer. He has never been bothered about not fitting in (as the above testifies.)

  • It must be an age thing. When I was a young one, I hated wearing jumpers, coats, or tights. I would go around in shorts and t-shirt in freezing weather and never felt the cold. Now though, I feel like I'm always wrapped up and still feel cold!

My DD doesn't feel the cold, she prefers to wear summer clothes all year round. She was wearing a sundress this weekend and was quite happy.

They were doing a pyjama day for Children in Need today at school. DD was quite annoyed that my OH wouldn't let her wear her vest top and shorts PJs.
