Cable wifi connection died mid-post - unable to reconnect????

Hi guys

An update. I had reconnected my lappy via wires and was in the middle of a post (again) earlier today when up popped a balloon message from the wireless icon on the taskbar saying 'wreless network now connected, signal strength very good' - ???????????????????

I'm soooo pleased its working again but am totally confused why it stopped then started again!
When I scanned for networks it did find mine and a new one - a bt home hub with a very good signal. Maybe this had knocked out my connection

Now I have it back I know I need to secure it. Can I ask for someone to point me in the right direction for (easy) instructions on the best way to secure my wifi connection.
